INSIDE: WHAT TO DO WHEN JUNK TAKES OVER THE GARAGE? LEARN HOW TO REORGANIZE YOUR GARAGE WITH THE FAMILY! When the hubby said let’s reorganize the garage, he meant him. RIGHT? We have a 2 car garage that has only been able to hold ONE car for about 2 weeks. That is code for its full of a bunch of other stuff. Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Those funds help keep this site alive and kickin’ but it doesn’t cost YOU a thing! Click here for the full disclosure. You know – the bikes, lawn equipment, extra fridge, ping pong table, fishing stuff, beach chairs, tools, and of course the dart board. Some of these things have to stay but others must go. Like when was the last time we used the ping ping table? Before (excuse the dogs) We had no room to do anything….so the hubby went to work. First – He ordered all the necessary organizing things: PURGE! We got rid of the bikes, ping pong table, and coolers we no longer use. Not to mention all the little things that gathered in the garage during COVID. Even the tool bench that he built more than 10 years ago for our old house. All of these things went to good homes, I promise! Then, Kris put the new equipment together. Clean Using a shopvac, we cleaned all the dust, cobwebs, and bugs. Finish I am so impressed with this man’s organization skills. Here are the finished products Since the garage makeover – we have spent so much more time out there. Everyone knows where everything is – it is amazing! Happy Organizing,

Last year, I challenged you all to a more organized home….it was a lot to take on, I know! BUT – didn’t it feel great? Well, challenge 2020 is 12 Months of Giving. Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Those funds help keep this site alive and kickin’ but it doesn’t cost YOU a thing! Click here for the full disclosure. Declutter your home while donating to those in need. Let’s take each month and challenge ourselves to removing it from our home and giving it to those who need it more. We will start here: January and November – Food Find your local community kitchen using this website – Food Pantries You will find your state and city – each city will have a list of food pantries. Connected to that are websites that instruct you on how to donate. Donations are usually accepted during certain hours and a list of what they DON’T take will be on the site. No donation is too small. The great part about food banks is they give things to people based on their family size. Don’t be afraid to give away ONE can of something you won’t use….someone will use it. The other option is to give to your local homeless shelter. This is a little trickier. They are VERY limited on what they will take because one box of cereal won’t feed everyone…….. February and August – Clothing If you spend each weekend in the month of February and August cleaning out closets and dressers, by the end of the month I am willing to bet you have at LEAST 2 trash bags FULL of unused clothing…in ALL sizes! Here is where some research might be needed on your part for our Challenge 2020 – 12 months of giving. There are plenty of organizations that help get clothing to people in need for cheap. Goodwill stores, Salvation Army, Rescue Missions…..but most of these places CHARGE for the items. If you want totally free – do your homework. Check out this website – Money Crashers – they have a list of nationwide clothing donation sites. March – Towels Donating to a local animal shelter is a good way to offload some of those not so needed towels. You know the ones you got for your wedding that don’t match your style or the 45 extra beach towels that you’ve accumulated over the years. This is an ultimate list of things your local animal shelter always needs: Want to find a NO-KILL shelter to donate to? Check out Best Friends for all the shelters in your area. ***Update – obviously 2020 has become a WAY bigger challenge to most of us than we could have seen when starting this Challenge 2020 – 12 Months of Giving. I did not follow through on several of these months because of this pandemic. BUT – maybe that should be the bigger reason to continue this challenge!!!**** April – Books I know, I know…..how many of you read physical books these days? I know I don’t very often. BUT – there is nothing like having a book on the beach….and I DO live at the beach…so I have some. I’m sure if you thought about it, you do too, especially to continue our Challenge 2020 – 12 months of giving. And then there is the kids……have books they don’t read anymore? Too young for the growing kids? Give them away! Sure you can give them to your friend’s kids….I know I loved when people gave me books for my kiddos. But there are other options too. Check out these places to see if they would like your books: May and December – Toys In this house, we have short attention spans. Meaning – lots of toys we “have to have” for Christmas end up being dust collectors by Spring. So…twice a year I go through bedrooms and the toy/playroom and find a bunch of things that my kids have outgrown. Instead of giving them to Goodwill……are there places that could use them….for free? June – Dishes I know that plates and bowls are not replaced every year, but if you have 5 pie plates? Do you really need them ALL? Or maybe you bought the newest Pampered Chef – if you have that one….why do you need another? July – Personal Hygiene I have this co-worker that takes every hotel shampoo and soap, every time she goes anywhere. She donates those items to our homeless population. AND let me tell you, they are SUPER grateful for those items. How many of you go on trips and bring your own personal care items? I know I do…except maybe body soap. So, is it wrong to take the shampoo and bring it back to our homeless? I don’t think so. So where can you donate personal care items? Let’s check it out: September – Home Decor If you can’t find a way to upcycle your furniture for yourself or someone close to you, consider donating it. Of course, pillows and appliances certainly apply as well. Make sure you call before you haul appliances though, some places will NOT take appliances. Here are some ideas to get you started: October – Warm Jackets and Blankets I picked this month to go through your jackets and blankets because it isn’t quite panic time in many parts of the country. We know that it will get VERY cold, VERY quickly. Going through your closets (and the kids’) to find jackets and blankets BEFORE there is a huge need makes more sense…to me anyway! Jackets are usually used for one season in this house. The kids grow so much from one winter to the next. And honestly, the jackets are kept in pretty good shape. I always offer them to friends first. But I’ve found that the older I get, the more I notice the kids at school getting out of the car with NO jackets!!!! Therefore, here is my list for giving jackets (I’ll get to blankets in a minute): Ok, now let’s talk about blankets – so many people need blankets. There are the usual places – homeless shelters. In general, just find a homeless person and give them a blanket. They aren’t going to turn it down. But there are some places you may not know need them: The bottom line is – don’t throw away those “less than” perfect blankets. Don’t give them to Goodwill – Give them away for FREE to people who shouldn’t have to PAY for them. Catch my drift???? Finish the year strong – November and December – Food and Toys/Books Like we did the previous months of our Challenge 2020 – 12 months of giving, keep in mind that these are the months that families are struggling to keep the lights on while figuring out how to play Santa. I read an article that said the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots campaign will take “gently used” toys. They give them away in a different way than the “new, unwrapped” toys. How do you feel about this challenge? Can you do it? Something specific each month of the year, declutter your home and help someone in need…..sounds easy….right? Let’s do it!!!! Let me know what your ideas are!!!! Happy Giving,

INSIDE: SEE HOW TO CLEAN YOUR GROSS FURNITURE WITHOUT NASTY CHEMICALS AND KEEP YOUR FAMILY SAFE FROM THE DIRT!!! Spills are a part of every mom’s life. Sometimes take over our lives…..so wouldn’t it be great to have a way to clean your furniture without chemicals?!?!?! Yes, yes it would!!!!! When we moved into our current house, we bought new furniture. I had the genius idea of owning white-ish couches. I thought, no big deal, I’ll just clean them. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! These things DO NOT come clean! I tried everything, even the strong chemical stuff. In fact, I decided that I don’t like the “comfort” of these couches because they won’t come clean. These couches have been thrown away……taken to the dump. They were so bad, I couldn’t fathom giving them to someone…….GROSS!!!!! Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Those funds help keep this site alive and kickin’ but it doesn’t cost YOU a thing! Click here for the full disclosure. Part of the aforementioned purchase was an over-sized chair. It is actually very comfortable and many visitors have actually fallen asleep in it. However, it is the same material (not color thank GOD) thus…………shows all the stains. Here are the starting pieces I also have this old microfiber chair from our first house. It’s funny how easy it is to “ignore” less used or seen furniture. BUT microfiber can look a LOT dirtier than it actually is. Today I am going to tell you how to clean BOTH types of these pieces of furniture without chemicals. Leather is a whole different ball game. So we aren’t going to talk about them today. I have tried the chemical cleaners and it did NOTHING for the crappy furniture. So I decided to make my own cleaner and see what happened. Honestly, if it didn’t work, I wasn’t out anything….they couldn’t look any worse! Most of the ingredients you probably have on hand already. If not, run to Target and grab the things you need. Or click the links below and make a Target Drive Up Order. Now to play scientist!!! And here are the final products: Honestly, I am amazed at the transformation. I would have done this years ago had I known…… Before and afters: Let’s see how long it lasts! Try this cleaner and let me know how it goes! Happy Cleaning,

INSIDE: HOW TO KEEP YOUR HOUSE ORGANIZED BECAUSE IT IS A JOURNEY I figured something out yesterday, my organizational journey needs careful follow up. WHAT? It doesn’t just STAY this way? I can’t just organize and hope that everyone follows every rule every day? NOPE. You have to maintain the organization. You have to put forth the effort, a little each day. Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Click here for the full disclosure. Those funds help keep this site alive and kickin’ but it doesn’t cost YOU a thing! When I started in January, I took one room and cleared the clutter. Over time, this room became lived in again. Now that it was clean, people wanted to spend time in there. Well, people leave things behind. Coffee cups, toys, clothing….NOW I have to take the time to maintain this room. I also don’t want to spend every weekend cleaning my house. It would take up my whole Saturday. So….I enlisted help. I have someone come to my house every other week to clean. She cleans the bathrooms, kitchen, runs the vacuum, dusts, and makes the beds. Every other week, she cleans the blinds, windows, and fans. Occasionally, she cleans the refrigerator and will even sweep the front and back porch. I have noticed several things since hiring my house cleaner – she doesn’t do as good a job as me, but it saves me so much time that I don’t mind going behind her sometimes. The other thing is I have so much more time to do the things I WANT to do. Sacrifice is well worth the reward! The thing she doesn’t – and CAN’T do – is keep up with my organization. She puts everything in her way into a giant pile. BUT….what if I kept up the organization so she didn’t have anything to put into a pile? That would lessen my eye rolling when I see the pile…. Let’s refocus today…. 1 – List of rooms that need attention every day These are the rooms that are lived in every day and need to have the clutter cleared daily or it can get out of control. Make a list of your own rooms. 2 – List of rooms that need attention once per week Not so lived in, but still gather “things” that don’t belong. 3 – Today, start by picking your first room I will start in my dining room today. Not so lived in, but it gathers a TON of things….that DO NOT belong! Current situation: 4 – Organize your plan of attack Do a quick scan…what does not belong? Where should it be? Start there! Ok – roughly 10 minutes…only because I stopped to pet a pup….would have been 5. 4 – Keep going!!!! Move from one room to the next. It took me 20 minutes to do 6 rooms. Quick, nothing major, and BOOM! I feel like I have accomplished so much! I know….the kids are going to DESTROY it when they get home but….that’s ok, we are making memories! Remember, sometimes it is just about starting somewhere! I will remind myself of this as I move my way to the bedrooms. I can tell you that making the kids help me clean up has improved and I get much less of a fight these days. Happy tidying,

Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Click here for the full disclosure. Everything can change…..in a New York minute…..nothing stays the same. You know why I love this Don Henley song, not because it’s incredibly sad, but because it reminds me to live in the now. Enjoy what you have when you have it, cause it WILL change. And this might be the greatest way to make your house a HOME! Constant change, constant improvement, never settling for what you don’t LOVE! No one wants to sit in their living room and feel uncomfortable or bored. No one wants to see the same colors in every.single.room!!! BORING! So when designing the third room in our house (with a lot of reluctance), I wanted some color. We bought the couches thinking they would be pretty and comfy….LIES! Nothing was comfy about them AND they certainly didn’t stay pretty for long. First spill showed the true colors of these couches. It was a nightmare. BUT……we bought the matching arm chair in teal! AND I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!! (Gotta stay positive here!) Of course, as most people do these days, I went on Pinterest to get some ideas on how to make a teal living room work. I came across this picture on HGTV. That one little lamp in the back next to that burnt orange…..I was inspired! Funny where we get inspiration from. Again, Pinterest wasn’t getting me much of what I wanted in the way of making orange and teal/turquoise work together. But at this point, I had convinced Kris that this was going to be awesome. (He is still not sure about all that orange, but happy wife = happy life.) Here is how we created a New York Living Room We spent a lot of our free time, during those days we had more of it, shopping around at different stores trying to find our flair. We tried antique shops, big box stores, local design studios, and everyone’s favorite Swedish market, IKEA. One day while we were at a department store, Kris found ONE throw pillow that sparked new energy into the whole thing. We found curtains, a throw blanket, a rug, and more pillows based on that one pillow! I know, you are thinking…..what does this have to do with New York…..nothing yet. Stay focused. Wall art is the key to my happiness. A room doesn’t feel complete until I find some pictures. I’m not going to lie….Hobby Lobby has the best wall art. I can roam around that store and find everything I need and more. No commission on that one! You’re welcome! Again, out and about…because we had time…we went to the beloved HL and found this: And piece by piece we ended up feeling great about the way this room ended up (for a short time). NYC was a place I got to spend some time in as a young adult and was fortunate enough to experience my husband’s first time with him. He hated the idea of going there, all the people, the noise…but he was pleasantly surprised when we got there and went exploring. He loved Central Park, being able to walk anywhere, and the eclectic-ness of the food!! Not like any other place on the planet! Back to the room – we had to cover the couches with slip covers because the spills and stains were OUT OF CONTROL! It didn’t matter what it was, even water stained these dumb things! We added some more throw blankets and even created our own Thirty One pillow. A lamp broke so we replaced those with these. And one of my favorite things in the WHOLE house…a hand painted, one of a kind, straight from the heart painting. I found a picture online that I loved but it was all custom ordering. Since, I wasn’t ready to spend that kind of money and I couldn’t pick the colors I wanted…..I asked my very talented friend if she could do it. And what she gave me was more than I could have hoped for! I still need to frame it but….I just love it! A few years ago, I won an award and my husband knew the whole time…but he pretended he didn’t. When I got home, he bought me this great cabinet to display my award on. So thoughtful!!! I said earlier that we felt good for a short time….we need new couches and a new rug. It would be nice if the entertainment center matched the end tables and coffee table. We decided to add a recliner about a year ago, at least there is one comfy place to sit. The dog beds are in here, one dog is old so she can only travel short distances. Sometimes I wish I could throw out all of the furniture and start over in here but I still love my teal and orange. Making a house a home one room at a time,

INSIDE: SEE HOW YOU CAN RECLAIM YOUR UNDER THE STAIRS CLOSET FROM KHAOS AND FEEL LIKE YOUR ICKY CLOSET ISN’T SO ICKY ANYMORE Everyone has that spot in their house that if a visitor opened the door they would be mortified. Right!!? Well, that spot is our shoe & storage closet. Time to reclaim our icky shoe closet! Unfortunately, this closet is on the first floor near the kitchen, under the stairs. Basically in the middle of everything. The saving grace – it has a door!!!! I am going to show you this closet….don’t be scared. And DON’T JUDGE US!!!! Kris put the shelf in for me a few years ago. It was a great solution to the storage issues we had. It took some serious math…thank god he is a math genius!!! Current situation: ***UPDATE 12/2023 – While this system worked for a short time, we slowly began to run out of room again. Scroll to the end to see what it looks like now On the top shelf we have my grandmothers china. She gave that to us before she passed away and we just haven’t decided on a piece of furniture to display it. We also house the ‘Elf on a shelf’ here, it’s a place they’ll (the kids) never find her!!! Extra light bulbs are up there too. Second shelf currently holds Kris’s hats, random craft supplies held in cute little boxes, and my old office decorations. I don’t have an office or desk right now 🥺 so these stay at home until I finish my masters and start my new career 👩🏻‍⚕️ Third shelf has the kids school memory bins and some picture frames that need to be hung…when we find the right spot. Fourth shelf has shoes, floor cleaning solution, and my tripod. Fifth one has nothing on it. Probably because no one wants to bend down that far. And obviously, the floor has a TON of shoes. Too many shoes. Across from the storage shelves we have a cleaning tool hanger. Works perfect! Regardless of what I think, this is not effective for my family. No one puts their shoes away. I throw unfinished projects in there. It doesn’t make any sense. Purge So….I take a deep breath and pull everything out. I seriously don’t know what I just did. It was the biggest mess I have ever created! Everyone has about 15 pairs of shoes in there. The worst culprit – my husband. ‘But I wear them all!’ Not true. I found a pair of boots he hasn’t worn in a year in this closet. 🤦🏻‍♀️ To lessen the shoe load in this icky closet, I had each person pick the shoes the wanted down here. The rest of the shoes made their way to the owner’s closet. I threw away projects that I was never going to finish and actually pulled out 2 projects that were almost done….AND finished them!!! Clean I wiped down all the shelves with my favorite – Mrs. Meyers. Next, I swept the floor…..PHEW! That was not pretty. Organize The first thing we have to tackle are all the things that have OTHER homes. Cleaning supplies do NOT belong in here, so into the laundry room they go, with the other cleaning supplies. Now, we can put like things together back in….and here we are – I added an additional plastic bin for my festive decorating supplies. It made sense to put my door signs, console table flowers, and runner are in here when not in use, easy access and close proximity were factors in that decision. I turned the school memory boxes in a different direction to make room for the above mentioned box. The cute gray boxes on the second shelf have winter hats, my hot glue guns (I need all 3 of them close by at all times!!!), and shoe sprays. If you don’t know about sprays that turn into powders to eliminate odors….find here!!! Again, small change that made a tremendous impact on my organized life. We can all find our desired shoes, not battle the rest of the shoes on the floor and nothing unnecessary in this VERY important closet!!!! ***As promised – updated version – I moved the school memory boxes to my new craft room. Purchased shoe bins so everyone’s shoes could be coraled. I moved my festive decorations to the attic. And sadly – we retired the Elf on a Shelf – the end of an era, and finally freedom from hiding her and coming up with this we haven’t done for the past 12 years!!!! Good lord! My next project – paint the new to me cabinet so I can finally display my Grandmother’s china….this is why winter is great around here, nothing else to do….but paint furniture…sorry honey! Happy Organizing,

Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Click here for the full disclosure. How many of you have a pile of school pictures that you have no idea what to do with? Well, today I have some school picture ideas for you! Personally, I feel like a failure when it comes to showing off the pride of school pictures. You feel compelled to order them, because you want to have memories of each year…..yet, you NEVER give them to family and you don’t have enough places in your house to display every picture school takes (especially when they do fall AND spring pictures). So I’m trying to figure out the best way to display each year’s school picture without overwhelming the walls, desktops, and entertainment center shelves. Ask the kids. Do they feel like every picture needs to be prominently displayed forever? Mine said, “No just until the next one comes around.” Pick ONE place. Does every person that enters your home need to see these pictures? (Pizza delivery guy???) My opinion is NO! My close family and friends that come INTO my home should see my precious munchkins. So I will pick a place that is not in the direct line of sight for everyone that knocks at my door. Matching frames. Do they need to be matching? Honestly, I don’t know. If you are hanging them on a wall, it might be cool to have different sizes, shapes, colors etc…displaying them on a desk might call for matching. What I do know is Target has great deals on multiple packs of frames if that is what you choose. I think that in the grand scheme of things, displaying each year (or season) of school pictures is plenty. The kids feel special, you feel like a good parent, but the decor of the house isn’t totally thrown out the door. I decided to continue with the idea of displaying them in the office. To be fair, I already have a plan for a photo wall of their little lives….so….don’t be too sad when you see what I’ve taken down. Drum roll please. Wait…..it’s nothing major and maybe that’s more the point. Quick changes can make a world of difference!!! Just do them. Making these small changes made the room look more like home AND it forced me to clean off the bookshelf. Maybe that was my kick in the ass to move to this room next?!? We never painted it because it was the playroom for so long. Recently, we moved the playroom upstairs and made this the home office. Fortunately, this room just needs a coat of paint and a little bit of organization. Just do something,

INSIDE: TIRED OF DVD’S AND BLU-RAYS TAKING OVER YOUR LIVING ROOM? CHECK OUT THIS EASY AND FUNCTIONAL BETTER WAY TO STORE YOUR MOVIES! Movies are so essential to mom life. If you don’t have them, the children get unruly….HAHAH….they do that anyway but think about how much worse it would be?? Anyway, these giant blue and black containers take up a lot of space. And if you are like me, you want that clutter to go away! Go get your little helpers and pull out all your movies. Trust me – you have to make a mess first but it won’t stay that way. Then follow our step-by-step process for decluttering your movie mess and downsizing the movie madness: First – Sort your movies into duplicates You know the ones you HAD to replace when they came out on Blu-Ray?? This makes the DVD version a duplicate. Decide what other family would benefit from these treasures. And get them out of your pile! Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Those funds help keep this site alive and kickin’ but it doesn’t cost YOU a thing! Click here for the full disclosure. Second – Remove the artwork Take the artwork out of the outside cover. I found it easiest to bend the artwork on the pre-existing seam. The artwork will fit perfect into the new plastic holders. If it is a DVD/Blu-Ray combo, the DVD goes INSIDE the cover and the Blu-ray faces outward (I asked my all knowing husband and HE SAID Blu-Rays are much more scratch resistant). Third – Into the new holders The artwork, DVD, and Blu-ray went into the plastic. Everything should fit perfectly. There is a flap that covers the top of the plastic, I left mine open, but a little piece of tape would hold it closed it, if you wanted it to. Fourth – Kids vs Parents Use the BIG little brains to alphabetize and separate the movies. Both of my little people had so much fun doing this part. We took all of the newly packaged movies and separated them into 2 piles. One for the kid movies and one for the parent movies and then the kids alphabetized the movies. When the kids were done, we put all the movies in our new storage bins. It is so much easier to find a movie to watch now! They (the mess makers) keep it in order and everything is in its rightful place! Fifth – Final resting place Once they get sorted and separated, find some cute little bins and tuck them away in an available place. Last – Originals I left several movies in the original container like Star Wars The Complete Saga, Batman (Christian Bale versions), Planet Earth, and Baraka. There is something to be said for fancy packaging….Batman series came in the Bat Symbol…pretty cool! See….easy and better way to store your movies right? Comment below with your ideas on movie storage! Happy Organizing,

INSIDE: CONTINUE TO RESET YOUR LIFE AND MAKE SOME ORGANIZING CHANGES IN YOUR FAMILY ROOM. I am scheduled to have surgery tomorrow. I’m still not feeling great but I have things to do! I went small….the family room. It wasn’t too bad but needed a deep clean and re-organizing. Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Those funds help keep this site alive and kickin’ but it doesn’t cost YOU a thing! Click here for the full disclosure. I talked about the DVD collection, I ordered my problem solver so I’ll get to that next week. Next was under the coffee table. It has a horrible habit of collecting books, legos, markers, and dog toys. I looks hideous. So I took everything out from under there and found it’s proper home. Last time I was at Target, I grabbed these cute plastic bins. They fit perfect and will hold whatever nonsense the kids come up with without making it look like a trash pit. Everything got a dust and wipe with Mrs. Meyers. The couch covers were washed and the dogs threatened if they got back up there. Yeah right, I let those pups on the couches all the time. The teal cabinet behind the couch holds some arts and crafts. But mostly it’s decoration. Over the last few months it managed to collect some weird things like a stranger’s stocking. Honest, I have no idea where it came from. It only took me a few minutes but I felt much better about being out of it for a few days. Remember: small steps can make big differences. Be well,
