Remember on MTV Cribs when they would get to the bedroom and say ‘this is where the magic happens?’ Well….when you want a relaxing spa feel but have old dark wood…it doesn’t feel magical. Welcome to our dresser makeovers to bring the spa feeling to life. 15 years ago, Kris and I made the move from Charlotte to Myrtle Beach with the idea that we would raise our kids here and make it our home. We lived in an apartment for about a year and a half. We didn’t get many visitors back then. So our apartment was a bunch of hodge podge furniture we inherited from various places. It was nothing to be proud of……I promise! So when we bought our first house, we decided that we needed ALL new furniture. WHAT?!?!?! YUP…..all new!!!!! I had just finished nursing school and he was promoted….so we celebrated with new furniture and appliances. I digress – the furniture. We invested in a dining room table, couch, overaized chair, and bedroom set for the master. The furniture has held up wonderfully. BUT….it’s showing it’s age. And technically, I don’t love the ‘style’ anymore. So rather than get a new bedroom suite, I decided to change the style myself…with paint of course. Before Don’t mind the mess, we are living real lives here! Supplies: Directions: Remove drawers from dresser and empty the clothes. I kept mine on my bed in piles so I could easily put them back when I finished. Remove the old pulls with the screwdriver. Clean the drawers and dresser. I used the vacuum to get into the insides of the dresser without drawers. Lots of dust in there. Then wiped with Mrs. Meyers. If you are doing one color, just go for it! Two colors is more challenging. Just clean up between colors. In case you didn’t know, chalk paint requires zero priming and dries fast. So as soon as you finish one side or drawer, you can restart the next side or drawer. Use 3 coats for darker furniture. The coverage is great at that level. Thin, multiple coats is key. Insert the new pulls once everything is dry. I used these black pulls for the 5 drawer dresser and bottom 4 drawers for the one with a mirror. I changed the top 3 to these. Replace the drawers. Put the clothes back keeping with the rules – outlined here. Ready for the afters???? Side by side comparisons. Whatcha think? Brave enough to make a transformation like this in your bedroom? Happy Decorating,

Once upon a time, not so long ago, there was a family that built a pool in their backyard in July….by the time it was done summer was almost over and no one had any furniture left….POOR family. So Project Backyard was put on hold….. Fast forward to today – we have restarted that project and made some headway. Hence my lack of writing….I have been distracted. Not to mention all the craziness going on in the world….I was wearing so many other hats. Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Those funds help keep this site alive and kickin’ but it doesn’t cost YOU a thing! Click here for the full disclosure. This year, when Spring rolled around, we jumped at the chance to start shopping for our pool furniture. The girls got on Amazon and picked out some loungers. Kris and I went shopping to find the perfect set to complete our outdoor living area. Last year, I redid the teak set we had and called it a day. It wasn’t enough. We didn’t have a place for people to sit when they came to visit. So now we have fixed that and finally have everything we need to make it an outdoor living area we are proud of. Check out our new patio. We found the living room set at the local pottery store. It was the floor model so we could take it home that day. The dining set and firepit chairs came from Lowes. The loungers came from Amazon. Look at this from end of last summer to now I would say that Project Backyard is pretty close to complete. What comes next? Only time will tell……. See you again soon….I promise!

INSIDE: NIGHTSTAND MAKEOVER WITH MOD PODGE AND FABRIC. TIRED OF YOUR BORING FURNITURE? SEE HOW WE MAKEOVER THESE NIGHTSTANDS FOR OUR MASTER RETREAT! I am so bored with these classic nightstands. So during my Master Bedroom Makeover, I decided to take on a new method to refinishing furniture. Create new pieces by making over old nightstands with Mod Podge and fabric. Here are the nightstands in their former glory: Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Those funds help keep this site alive and kickin’ but it doesn’t cost YOU a thing! Click here for the full disclosure. Dirty, dinged up and overall boring! SO I took charge – Pick a color. This will need to be to your taste, but I decided to go a shade lighter than my walls. Before we go on, you should check us out on the socials: Facebook, Insta, Pinterest Find the perfect fabric. This was easy because I have been collecting yellow and gray fabric for about 5 years (yes, that’s how long it has taken me to start this project). When adding fabric to the drawers, you will need to keep in mind that if the fabric is light and the drawer is currently dark, you will have to do some prep. The prep is to simply prime the drawers first. Choose drawer knobs. I found these at Home Depot and did a quick pick-up (curbside too)!! Remove drawers and hardware. Cleaning the surface with my favorite Mrs. Meyers. And then paint on the primer. Measure the fabric for the drawers. Using a tape measure, collect the measurements of the drawers. Cut your fabric leaving an extra 2 inches for the overlay. Get out the MOD PODGE! Start the Mod Podge at the end of the drawer, using your fingers, press the fabric to the Mod Podge and drawer. Working in sections down the drawer, laying the MP on the drawer and the fabric for good grip. Be careful around the corners, it can be tricky. Decide if you are going to MP the sides or the top/bottom first. I did the top/bottom, so when I did the corners they would fold into the sides. Once that first layer is dry, go over the top of it with MP again. This will just solidify the glue. After your MP is dry, you can begin the next step. Cut off the excess Time to trim the fabric. You might have a little leftover on the sides. If this is the case, I recommend using a craft knife to cut the excess fabric. Even the smallest sheers can be hard to get into the necessary spots. Be careful not to cut yourself! Always aim away from your body and fingers. (SAFETY FIRST!) POLYCYRLIC Next is this magical stuff. Polycrylic is key. Not only does it coat the fabric to make it smooth, but it protects it from damage when things run into it. It dries clear and does not turn yellow. New Hardware Now, you may be asking….how am I going to put the new hardware in there? Very simple actually. Take the new screw and poke it through from the inside of the drawer. It will push the fabric enough for you to see it. You can use your craft knife to cut the hole large enough to get the screw through it. Now you are ready for the reveal!!!! Obviously, I have a lot more to do on my Master Bedroom makeover but it’s getting there. Before and After – Whatcha think? Crazy transformation right? Let me know if you have tried anything like this before. Happy Decorating,

I have officially gone MAD ! I literally want to paint every piece of furniture in my house…..nothing is safe! Oh well……. Today, I am tackling a little piece of furniture that sat in the corner of my front room, collecting dust mostly. It held 2 plants and has great structure. Just not crazy about the cherry looking wood and of course, it no longer goes with the other furniture….hint hint….. So here is the modern style side table before I unleashed my madness onto it – See, good bones, good structure…just a little blah in the color department for my current liking. Let me be very clear, part of this project was done after a few glasses of …..desperate times people, coping the best way I can! I know I’m safe from judgement here!!! Moving on, I have left over chalk paint from my console table makeover and I really like the idea of cohesive colors without being all matchy matchy. So, the idea was to switch up the color scheme but stick with the main idea. First order of business I gave the table a scrub with Mrs. Meyers. Start the paint Remember the caveat I just gave about the wine….I totally forgot to tape the top off before starting to paint….so I may have gotten some paint in places I didn’t intend for it to go…………… Correct your errors Well, the next day, I realized my errors, and set out to correct them the only way I could – I got more wine! Just kidding…..I sanded down some areas that received a little extra attention. It worked out well to get rid of my mistakes, the sponge sander is like my new eraser. Continue the madness I added the white paint to the top. Since I knew that the brush strokes would be visible, I decided to go in a different direction with each coat. It took 3 coats on the top, but it was worth it. Conclusion Did anyone look at this post and think….she’s writing with sequencing?? Yes, we are practicing our story writing around here – First, Next, Then, and Finally….I passed. Anyway – I love my “new” table and I think that I need a break from chalk paint. I’m stuck on the same colors and need to discover some more adventure…. I found a way to move into the front room already. What do you think? Am I ready to move on to different colors?? Happy Decorating,

SIMPLE SIDE TABLE MAKEOVER WITH CHALK SPRAY PAINT AND ANTIQUE GLAZE. Chalk paint is amazing stuff! I mean, no sanding? YEAH!!!!! So I decided to try out the spray paint version. I wasn’t crazy about the coverage but I had other plans for this project. Enter the simple side table – Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Those funds help keep this site alive and kickin’ but it doesn’t cost YOU a thing! Click here for the full disclosure It was a beautiful day and I didn’t want to get spray paint all over the garage so I took this adventure outside. Using Behr’s chalk spray paint in Gingham, I sprayed 3 coats, waiting one hour between each coat. Like I said, I wasn’t crazy about the coverage, but I didn’t need perfect with this project. I have been wanting to try layering chalk paint, but I remembered that I have this antique glaze from a previous project. And that seemed more fitting for this project. The glaze is super easy to use. An old rag dipped straight into the jar, then apply it right onto the project (in this case wood) over the paint. POOF! I didn’t want too much of the glaze so I ended up wiping each spot off with a dry rag too. After the glaze dried, I added a few layers of decorative wax and let that sit for a day. Overall, I am happy with the look and can’t wait to put it in the front room. I can’t do that right now…..because someone’s reef tank has come in and has taken over the room……want to follow his journey? Check it out here. I will update this post as soon as I have the room back….. Happy Decorating,

INSIDE: Have a Farmhouse Ladder with no use? See how we transform a farmhouse ladder into a coat rack. Have you seen these farmhouse ladders? It’s all the craze….and they are everywhere, used for millions of things. Well, I bought one and it has been sitting in our front room collecting dust and not being helpful at all…….UNTIL TODAY! Apparently, most people like to hang blankets or towels on them? Well, that isn’t my thing….BUT…….I like things that collect dust…..for no reason at all. Enter problem #2 – I don’t have a coat rack. Every coat or jacket that comes in my house gets thrown on the back of the kitchen chairs. When they pile up, we move them to the dining room chairs….I know it is a horrible idea and honestly, I have NO IDEA how it got started. When I made over the laundry room, I added a book bag/coat hanger and it fixed 1/2 the problem. Kids stuff. It did not fix the adult problem. After months of swirling around ideas we finally solved BOTH problems – use this ladder for a coat rack. Makes sense once I say it right? So let’s check out how we transform a farmhouse ladder into a useful coat rack. From a logistical standpoint, this could end up being a terrible idea. But I’m doing it anyway! I had a few problems to think through: Let’s take a look at how I solved each one of these problems. What will we use to hang the coats/jackets on? I thought about towel hangers, over the door hangers, and even metal key hangers. But none of these were the look or the hold I wanted. Then I thought about cutting dowels…..now I was getting to the style I wanted, but something was still off. I decided to see what a Google search for ‘wooden dowels’ would produce. Man, I hit the mother load! This website popped up and I was in heaven! I found these 3″ shaker pegs with #10 screws. It meant I literally needed to do NOTHING!!!! No sanding, no painting, no screws….NOTHING! I ordered 6 of them and got them for 90 cents a piece!!! How will it stay upright with all the coats/jackets at the front? I thought about adding a wide base to the bottom, but ultimately, I couldn’t figure out how that would look or work. We just needed to find a place that it could be leveled by the angle. I’ll show you what I mean in a minute. Can I stop it from slipping on my hardwood floors? We thought about rubber stoppers for kitchen chairs, but we couldn’t find the right size for the ladder. We thought about gluing non-slip rug pads to the bottom….we weren’t sure if that would be strong enough. But we were on the right track – so I went to the place where you can find JUST about anything you could ever need or want…..AMAZON! I could cut them to fit the feet of the ladder, they came with adhesive already on them, AND I could probably use them somewhere else too. HMMMM….. How will it not ruin my walls when it gets knocked around? Ahhhhh haaaaaaaa…….I could put the afore mentioned product on the back of the top portion of the ladder and save my walls. PHEW! I love when I can kill 2 birds with 1 stone! Where should I put it? Don’t most people put coat racks by the front door? Welllllll, we aren’t most people. We rarely use our front door and frankly, I think we would forget about the coat rack and go back to the chairs if I put it up there. So – there is the weird little corner between the dining room and the stairs….across from the shoe closet from hell. It’s the perfect place….but would the ladder covered with all the coats/jackets be too cumbersome? I didn’t want the feet to stick out and trip someone coming out of the dining room. I didn’t want it flat against the wall. If I turned it at an angle, it would fall over. Now that the BIG problems have been solved, it was time to MAKE the coat rack! Directions: Using a drill bit, Kris pre-drilled holes for me. We decided on 2 pegs on the top 2 slats and 2 for the sides. Once the holes were pre-drilled, it was easy to screw the pegs into the ladder slats. Next, I applied the non-slip feet to the bottom and top of the legs. The next step was probably the hardest. I needed to figure out what angle was going to keep the coat rack upright and not trip people. Now we have our kitchen chairs back…or dining room table is not covered in outer wear….and I used my $7.99 farmhouse ladder in my own way. AND we have a Farmhouse Ladder Coat Rack!!! What do you think? Did you use your farmhouse ladder for something other blankets? Let’s see what you’ve done!!!! Happy Decorating,

INSIDE: WE TAKE A BORING OLD TABLE AND TRANSFORM IT INTO A STUNNING CONSOLE TABLE TO REVAMP OUR LIVING ROOM Sometimes I get an itch to do something crazy and wild….sometimes I’m just boring (my hubby likes to remind me that I’m getting old). Of course, he was not surprised when I told him I wanted to makeover the console table we were gifted from his mom. This is funny because I am talking about painting furniture and he starts talking about building another salt water fish tank. Long story short – we saved a turtle from our pool on Christmas Eve and now we have this: Of course, that gave him the itch to start a reef tank. We had one in the old house but it’s a lot of work and with the kids, he decided he needed to dismantle it. Now that the kids are fairly self-sufficient…..he wants to start another one. The console table sits at our front entrance. It is my decoration station for all things holiday. But with the tank going into this room, I thought we should try to have a little more cohesiveness. I have scoured the internet looking for ideas for this console table makeover. So many that I think about them in my dreams. I decided this was the look I wanted. Without the perfect white paint….I think I need a little distressing…. SO off we went to Home Depot. Supplies: Step by Step Oh baby….gonna get to you girlllllll….oh wait that’s NKOTB. 1 – Remove the drawers I took the drawers out and moved them into the garage. I removed the hardware with a screwdriver and taped off the front to protect the rest of the drawer. 2 – Paint the drawers This part was nerveracking! I enlisted a cute little helper, that way if it got messed up, I could blame her cute little face! I used a regular paint brush, used very little paint, and went over one time. First coat done! Second coat! I was so amazed at how quickly it dried. Honestly, this was a test run. I have not used chalk paint before….I needed to see how well the paint would cover the dark stain without primer or sanding. Overall, I was impressed at the coverage. So I gave myself the green light to continue. 3 – The table There were a few spots on the top of the table that needed to be sanded, wear and tear mostly. I used my handy orbit sander and realized that if I wasn’t using chalk paint and had to sand all the poly off this table, I would have given up very quickly. After I wiped the saw dust off, I started painting the bottom. I was so nervous about brush strokes, but it was not an issue as I continued to paint. I painted the entire bottom portion with 3 coats. There were some spots that the stain bled through but nothing too extreme and I think it made it look cool. Once the bottom was dry, I taped off the top portion to make sure the charcoal color didn’t mess up the white. I thought it would be cool to tape it off in the middle of the lip, it was a good idea! Then I painted the top of the table…..OH that color. I was scared to DEATH. But now….I love it! I let this sit for a few days. Primarily because we took a mini-vacation. 4 – Distressing I couldn’t let this table look perfectly painted. It was too stark white for me. So I grabbed my sanding sponge and went crazy on the edges. I sanded the edges of each drawer. Then I picked some places on the bottom portion of the table. The details on the sides were perfect! 5 – The wax I had no idea what I was doing here. NONE! So when I opened the wax and found a strange substance….I felt ill-prepared. Instead of panicking, I did what I thought seemed correct. I found a lint free cloth and went crazy with the wax. I did 2 coats on everything and a 3rd on the top. 6 – New hardware Once everything was dry and had sat for 24 hours – per the wax people’s recommendations – I installed the new drawer pulls. Let me say – picking out these pulls was easy. They match the banister iron and the old hardware was a standard 3″ BUT…..they didn’t have the ones I wanted at my Home Depot store. SO….I ordered them online, had them shipped to my store FOR FREE, and picked them up a few days later. Thankfully, I looked ahead and had my pulls ready to go when the table wax was dry. Installing them was easy, I lined up the previous hardware holes and screwed in the new pulls. Are you ready for the big reveal????? I am so excited about this…… I am so happy about how this turned out, I want to do more immediately! It was easy, quick, and it looks great in this room. I cannot wait to see how it looks with our new tank! Before and After Happy Changes,

INSIDE: COME LEARN HOW TO DIY A WOOD SHELF WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK Wire shelves suck! But all builders use them….everywhere. To replace them takes a small fortune. So when I decided to take the first step in ridding my house of these pesky things, I had to find the right replacement. We started with a DIY wood shelf in the laundry room. I took to Pinterest, of course, and found this picture. We immediately fell in love! I don’t have the original source….sorry about that. I’m not trying to steal anyone’s hard work. Sometimes, figuring out where to start is the hardest part for me….how about you? Hmmmmm, measuring the room is important! Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Those funds help keep this site alive and kickin’ but it doesn’t cost YOU a thing! Click here for the full disclosure. That’s where I’ll start…. I used a measuring tape to measure from wall to wall. Mine was 92″ so when I went to Home Depot I knew exactly what to ask for. Of course, they are the experts so they made some recommendations based on what I was building. I bought a 12″ x 90″ x 1″ inch piece of pine. When I got home, I realized that it was actually a 94″ piece of wood. No big deal, Handy Man Kris made an additional cut for me (but Home Depot can do it for you, if you need it). While I was at The Home Depot, I also picked up the pieces I wanted to hang the shelf from. Here is what I bought: While I was there, I decided to grab my wood stain. Oh so pretty, so pretty and whitty….. I went with a Mission Oak stain plus poly in satin, hopefully this saves me a step. We loved the way Mission Oak looked on the display….so we grabbed a quart. I also needed to grab a stain brush, I’ve never stained anything (there I said it). I’m actually really spoiled. I ask my husband to do something handy and he does it for me. This is the first time I attempted something like this on my own. He did help me (A LOT)!! But he also taught me a lot! Now that I have all my supplies, I got to work. Deep breath – I can do this! Stain I followed the directions on the stain. It did not recommend sanding first so….I didn’t. I did test out the stain before I brushed it on the whole piece. When I was happy that I chose the right stain, I continued, using long brush strokes and NOT going back over my work. After about 6 hours, I flipped the board and stained the other side. I let this dry overnight. The next morning, I got out the handy sander and using 220 grit, I did a light sanding of all sides. I wiped the sand dust off and began staining again. I was happy with the color after the second coat but I had left some stain drips so I had to sand again. Once I sanded it, I actually liked the way it looked better. I decided I didn’t want to do another coat and was willing to take my chances on the poly. Hang the iron pipes Kris had to help me with this one. I have stated on numerous occasions that I am NOT good with power tools. OR MATH! So we measured and did some math….let’s be clear….Kris did the math. Once we decided where the flanges should be hung, we used a stud finder to determine if we needed the anchors or not. Anything that wasn’t going into a stud, got an anchor. We marked the top hole of the flange, hammered in the anchors, and got drilling! After the flanges were hung, we twisted the pipes in place and screwed the caps on loosely. We placed the board on the pipes and screwed the caps on tighter. The caps held the board in place nicely. (I was so excited, I forgot to take pictures.) I love this DIY wood shelf. And Kris loves it so much, he wants to put more of them around!!! Here are the before and afters of the laundry room: Sweet relief! I seriously detested that wire shelf! If feels so great to be done! Wanna see the whole laundry room transformation?? Check out this post! Have questions about building your own shelf? Ask away….if it has to do with math, I’ll ask Kris, don’t worry! Happy DIY’ing,

INSIDE: HOW TO CARE FOR TEAK FURNITURE AND REVIVE IT TO LOOKING NEW, EVEN IF IT’S OLD! With the pool construction nearing an end, we kicked it in high gear to find all the accessories we wanted for the deck. Years ago, we found an outdoor teak furniture set at Kroger for $160. What?!?? Actually it was 12 years ago!!! We have never found another set like it so we did everything we could to care for it. Teak is a great wood for outdoor furniture. It’s a hard wood therefore makes sturdy furniture. Naturally occurring in Southern Asia, teak is weather resistant and can take on the toughest rains! Perfect for our hot & humid southern summers! However, unlike other hard woods, teak needs lots of love to keep its natural beauty. Sun can drain the wood of its color and moisture so it requires some oiling every few years. Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Those funds help keep this site alive and kickin’ but it doesn’t cost YOU a thing! Click here for the full disclosure. In the 12 years we’ve owned this furniture I’ve only oiled it 2 times before today! But….knowing what I wanted pushed me to do it the right way this time. First vacuum all the debris and spider webs off the underside. Then give it a hose down, cleaning off any leftover dirt. Before the next step, you need to be sure it is completely dry!!!! Freshly washed and dried. You can see where the cushions have saved it from some damage. The next order of business was to oil the teak! For this you need these supplies: Teak oil hardens INSIDE the wood so several coats are required to get the look you desire. AND if you’ve not oiled it in a long time…it will absorb the oil at lighting speeds. Using your stain sponges, pour the oil a little at a time. You don’t want the sponge getting all the oil. And then you wipe. It’s just that simple. Try to follow the grain of the wood but some pieces are more difficult to do this with. And that my friends is what some elbow grease and teak oil can do for you! Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go finish the table and couch! We have people to entertain in our new pool!! Happy Teaking,
