I am so bored with these classic nightstands. So during my Master Bedroom Makeover, I decided to take on a new method to refinishing furniture. Create new pieces by making over old nightstands with Mod Podge and fabric.

Here are the nightstands in their former glory:

Dirty, dinged up and overall boring! SO I took charge –

This will need to be to your taste, but I decided to go a shade lighter than my walls.

This was easy because I have been collecting yellow and gray fabric for about 5 years (yes, that’s how long it has taken me to start this project).

When adding fabric to the drawers, you will need to keep in mind that if the fabric is light and the drawer is currently dark, you will have to do some prep. The prep is to simply prime the drawers first.

I found these at Home Depot and did a quick pick-up (curbside too)!!

Cleaning the surface with my favorite Mrs. Meyers. And then paint on the primer.

Using a tape measure, collect the measurements of the drawers. Cut your fabric leaving an extra 2 inches for the overlay.

Start the Mod Podge at the end of the drawer, using your fingers, press the fabric to the Mod Podge and drawer. Working in sections down the drawer, laying the MP on the drawer and the fabric for good grip.

Be careful around the corners, it can be tricky.

Decide if you are going to MP the sides or the top/bottom first. I did the top/bottom, so when I did the corners they would fold into the sides.

Once that first layer is dry, go over the top of it with MP again. This will just solidify the glue.

After your MP is dry, you can begin the next step.

Time to trim the fabric. You might have a little leftover on the sides. If this is the case, I recommend using a craft knife to cut the excess fabric. Even the smallest sheers can be hard to get into the necessary spots. Be careful not to cut yourself! Always aim away from your body and fingers. (SAFETY FIRST!)

POLYCYRLIC

Next is this magical stuff. Polycrylic is key. Not only does it coat the fabric to make it smooth, but it protects it from damage when things run into it. It dries clear and does not turn yellow.

Now, you may be asking….how am I going to put the new hardware in there?

Very simple actually. Take the new screw and poke it through from the inside of the drawer. It will push the fabric enough for you to see it. You can use your craft knife to cut the hole large enough to get the screw through it.

Now you are ready for the reveal!!!!

Obviously, I have a lot more to do on my Master Bedroom makeover but it’s getting there.

Before and After –

Whatcha think? Crazy transformation right?

Let me know if you have tried anything like this before.
