How to Organize Your Laundry Room for a Fresh Start

INSIDE: Check out how to organize your laundry room for a fresh start. Discover practical tips to declutter, maximize space, and create an efficient, stress-free laundry routine

About 5 years ago, I tackled the ugly, cluttered mess of a laundry room. Well, 5 years is a long time to go without a single change.

🎵 No change, I can change….think of violins in the background, epic drum beat…..you know the song….🎵

Time to update the most disliked room in the house, the laundry room.

Check out the original post here to see where we started and how it ended all those years ago.

Funny story – I did not take a picture of the before state of the laundry room….I thought I did, but nope. Oh well, you’ll have to just trust that it was a mess.

Also let me say, something must have been right about the way we organized the first time because not much has changed.

I did have to get new washer and dryer AGAIN…….I do not understand why things aren’t made with the same quality they once were. This is the 3rd washer and dryer in 10 years. The set before the 10 year mark only lasted 8 years maybe…..I thought these things were supposed to be like lifetime purchases? And they are not cheap.

We bought this set about 2 years ago. I swear if they don’t last at least 10 years, I’m using a laundry mat and turning the laundry room into the dog’s room. OR something……

We put the pedestals under them to add more storage.

I have never had a working sink in the laundry room. But I have to tell you, it comes in handy. Stains need to be scrubbed out and it is much easier to do this in the laundry room.

We are not changing this. Our wood shelf has made us very happy over the years.

Check out this post to see how we made it.

We failed on this one. I thought 2 baskets would be enough…..HA!

Enter cute woven baskets from Target found here.

What, you may ask, do I put in these baskets?

Since I have some cleaning supplies under my washer and dryer, I can use these baskets for bulk items.

Extra soap, rags…..OH OH……I recently cleaned out under the kitchen sink………..I found several items that didn’t belong under the sink, but rather in the laundry room.

The other part of the storage journey that failed was my previous glass and metal laundry soap containers. NOPE they rust. So I replaced them with more useful options – for us at least.

Special comment – previously I wrote about making your own laundry detergent. I gave up on this. I’m sorry. I realized that convenience and my time is worth the extra money. While the self-made detergent was less chemicals, I lost time making it and my helper abandoned ship. So back to Tide I went.

Once I got my new containers, I put all the liquids in them.

Check out how easy it was in the video below!!

I dusted the shelf with Swiffer Duster and wiped everything down with my favorite Mrs. Meyers.

After realizing that there were several items on the washer and dryer that belonged in the pedestals, I moved them into their proper place and that freed up all the space I needed for my new laundry containers.

After one load of laundry, I noticed that the plastic containers move around on the washer a LITTLE too easily. I thought of 2 fixes for this – nonslip material or turnable plastic organizers. I actually had the turnable organizers on hand (don’t tell but I was going to see if this was a good option for the unruly spice cabinet while the hubby was away on business).

PERFECT!!!

Happy Organizing,
