How to Start Your Seeds Indoors

INSIDE: HOW TO PREPARE YOUR GARDEN FOR SPRING AND FALL HARVESTS USING YOUR OWN GREENHOUSE.

It’s getting close to Spring….nicer weather, more outdoor time, and the prospect of growing your own vegetables!!! Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy!!!!

First you have to know your zone, and nothing goes outdoors until the DANGER of frost is gone.

  • Plan the garden. Where are you putting all of these veggies once they are in the ground? Are they container plants? Can they grow in the type of sunlight you are going to provide them? Do your sprinklers reach that area?
  • What are you planting? Not every seed needs to be started indoors. Some plants are hearty enough that their seeds go right into the ground. So know what your seeds need. You will also learn from experience (years ago, I started every seed indoor but now…..I rarely start any).
  • Complementary planting. Will the plants you plan on putting next to one another work together or will they fight each other?
  • Healthy soil. Probably the most important. So visit Home Depot for some organic compost and organic vegetable mix. Just add this into your existing soil or into your beds and containers. Once you fill them up once, it won’t take so much to fill them the next season.

To start seeds indoor OR sow directly?

This is completely up to you and depends on where you live. Read your seed packets and determine if it is necessary. If it is, follow the easy set up instructions below.

Build you own indoor greenhouse with biodegradable pots, seed starting mix (organic like this one), organic seeds, and a greenhouse made out of foil pans with plastic lids (like this).

To create your greenhouse:

  1. Lay out the foil pans
  2. Break the pots apart and lay them in the foil pans
  3. Don’t over stuff your greenhouse, just buy extra foil pans…they are only $1
  4. Put the seed starting soil in the pots – pack the soil slightly
  5. Follow the directions on the seed package for how deep to insert the seed
  6. Water the soil
  7. Put water at the bottom of the foil pan, just enough to reach all the pots, DO NOT over water the bottom
  8. Put the top on the foil pan
  9. Place the pan in the sunlight
  10. The sun and water will create a greenhouse for you! SO don’t open it until it’s time to water.
  • On the back of the seeds, it will tell you to start indoors and when.
This seed does NOT need to be started indoors, but it clearly tells you when it can go outside.
  • Move the plants outdoors when the last frost is GONE – not maybe, but for sure gone! The ground should be warm most mornings. NO QUEEN ELSA!
  • The idea behind the biodegradable pots is that you can put them in the ground as is. No transplanting needed. HOWEVER, past experience has taught me that you should cut off the bottom at the very least.
