Remember on MTV Cribs when they would get to the bedroom and say ‘this is where the magic happens?’ Well….when you want a relaxing spa feel but have old dark wood…it doesn’t feel magical. Welcome to our dresser makeovers to bring the spa feeling to life. 15 years ago, Kris and I made the move from Charlotte to Myrtle Beach with the idea that we would raise our kids here and make it our home. We lived in an apartment for about a year and a half. We didn’t get many visitors back then. So our apartment was a bunch of hodge podge furniture we inherited from various places. It was nothing to be proud of……I promise! So when we bought our first house, we decided that we needed ALL new furniture. WHAT?!?!?! YUP…..all new!!!!! I had just finished nursing school and he was promoted….so we celebrated with new furniture and appliances. I digress – the furniture. We invested in a dining room table, couch, overaized chair, and bedroom set for the master. The furniture has held up wonderfully. BUT….it’s showing it’s age. And technically, I don’t love the ‘style’ anymore. So rather than get a new bedroom suite, I decided to change the style myself…with paint of course. Before Don’t mind the mess, we are living real lives here! Supplies: Directions: Remove drawers from dresser and empty the clothes. I kept mine on my bed in piles so I could easily put them back when I finished. Remove the old pulls with the screwdriver. Clean the drawers and dresser. I used the vacuum to get into the insides of the dresser without drawers. Lots of dust in there. Then wiped with Mrs. Meyers. If you are doing one color, just go for it! Two colors is more challenging. Just clean up between colors. In case you didn’t know, chalk paint requires zero priming and dries fast. So as soon as you finish one side or drawer, you can restart the next side or drawer. Use 3 coats for darker furniture. The coverage is great at that level. Thin, multiple coats is key. Insert the new pulls once everything is dry. I used these black pulls for the 5 drawer dresser and bottom 4 drawers for the one with a mirror. I changed the top 3 to these. Replace the drawers. Put the clothes back keeping with the rules – outlined here. Ready for the afters???? Side by side comparisons. Whatcha think? Brave enough to make a transformation like this in your bedroom? Happy Decorating,

Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Click here for the full disclosure. February is a month for love….and practicing kindness is part of that love. During our 12 months of giving challenge, we take something in our own home and donate it to our community. February is clothing donation month. A way to declutter AND help others….who wouldn’t want to do that? Show of hands?? For February, we are going to focus on clothing. I suggest setting aside several days for this adventure. Whether you tackle a little each day or spend an entire day doing it, we all need to clean out our closets and dressers. Where do we start: Make a list of rooms and clothing storage units: Hubby closet and dresser My closet and dresser Oldest dresser Youngest dresser Some of these tasks are going to require a lot of work. Rules of engagement: You can use the KonMari method, if you want. But clothing doesn’t spark my joy….so these are my questions – Does it fit? Do I like the way it looks on me? Will I wear it? If any of these questions has a “NO” answer, GONE! Purging is the most important part of the process – and it feels really great to have a fresh start. We decided to take each dresser drawer by drawer, one day at a time, in reverse order from the list. Youngest child’s dresser: Top drawer: Undies, socks, bathing suits, and gymnastics leotards. Well, score one for Mom cause the leos are too small but I know just the kiddo that can use them! I don’t know how you feel about this….but I don’t think underwear is a donate-able item? Is it? I didn’t take pictures of this drawer….privacy is very important!!!! Second drawer: Jammies. This was just a matter of size and does she wear it. Third drawer: Shirts. We figured out what fit, what she would wear, and then separated by types of shirts. Long sleeves, short sleeves, and school/camp shirts. Fourth drawer: Pants. Really, it was separate pants and shorts. Last drawer: Dresses. Summer, winter, and fancy dresses. Well, not too many fit anymore. 😥 AND we found some sweatshirt in there! Middle child’s dresser: This one is a little easier because she just went through a growth spurt and we had to determine what she had after everything looked like she was waiting for a flood. Needless to say, she does not have an overabundance of clothing right now. In fact, it wasn’t even worth going through it. Oldest child’s dresser and closet: My son has already completed his task and ended up with a 30 gallon trash bag FULL! I didn’t even have time to take before pictures. Since the kids did such an amazing job during their February clothing donation challenge, Mom and Dad had to hold up their end of the bargain. Hubby’s dresser and closet Since the master closet makeover, my husband and I have kept up with our closets fairly well. So the purge in here was pretty limited. UNTIL……..I went to his dresser…………………………………………………………………………. Ummmmmmmmm…………………….I love him. I really do. I’m going to show you the before pictures – there is nothing to say…. Top drawer: I do NOT know why ONE person would need all of these socks…..but he claims he does. Dress socks for work, white socks for sneakers, and warm socks for cold weather. Second drawer: Home to the white t’s and…underwear? I guess when you have an entire drawer FULL of socks you can’t make room for underwear in there…so the next best place is the next drawer – with your white t-shirts….whatever works for the user! No picture….again privacy issues….. Third drawer: This is where the greatest purge took place. Many of these shirts haven’t been worn in years….I removed them and refolded the rest. Fourth drawer: The comfy drawer! I found 3 pairs of pants BEHIND this drawer. Do you know what this tells me? Things were stuffed so tight in there the pants started running away! HAHAHA! Bottom drawer: I couldn’t open this drawer when I started. Of course, when I removed the runaway pants from the above drawer, I was able to move it a little. I literally had to remove 5 pairs of shorts to open the drawer. My dresser and closet Since I had done this about a year ago, my dresser and closet were not in need of a complete overhaul….like some people. But some drawers needed attention – Jammie drawer I have a TON of comfortable pants that I don’t wear. Time to give them away. YES, I still have a t-shirt from my high school softball team! Shirt drawer I have accumulated several shirts this year…therefore I must get rid of some. Closet This was pretty easy because it was mainly my shoes and of course my Thirty One collection that needed organizing. I got rid of 4 pairs of shoes. And decided that my Thirty One Collection isn’t that bad this time! PHEW! This concludes our February Clothing Donation Month for our 12 months of Giving Challenge. Did you miss last months giving challenge? Check it out here! Happy Donating,

Last year, I challenged you all to a more organized home….it was a lot to take on, I know! BUT – didn’t it feel great? Well, challenge 2020 is 12 Months of Giving. Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Those funds help keep this site alive and kickin’ but it doesn’t cost YOU a thing! Click here for the full disclosure. Declutter your home while donating to those in need. Let’s take each month and challenge ourselves to removing it from our home and giving it to those who need it more. We will start here: January and November – Food Find your local community kitchen using this website – Food Pantries You will find your state and city – each city will have a list of food pantries. Connected to that are websites that instruct you on how to donate. Donations are usually accepted during certain hours and a list of what they DON’T take will be on the site. No donation is too small. The great part about food banks is they give things to people based on their family size. Don’t be afraid to give away ONE can of something you won’t use….someone will use it. The other option is to give to your local homeless shelter. This is a little trickier. They are VERY limited on what they will take because one box of cereal won’t feed everyone…….. February and August – Clothing If you spend each weekend in the month of February and August cleaning out closets and dressers, by the end of the month I am willing to bet you have at LEAST 2 trash bags FULL of unused clothing…in ALL sizes! Here is where some research might be needed on your part for our Challenge 2020 – 12 months of giving. There are plenty of organizations that help get clothing to people in need for cheap. Goodwill stores, Salvation Army, Rescue Missions…..but most of these places CHARGE for the items. If you want totally free – do your homework. Check out this website – Money Crashers – they have a list of nationwide clothing donation sites. March – Towels Donating to a local animal shelter is a good way to offload some of those not so needed towels. You know the ones you got for your wedding that don’t match your style or the 45 extra beach towels that you’ve accumulated over the years. This is an ultimate list of things your local animal shelter always needs: Want to find a NO-KILL shelter to donate to? Check out Best Friends for all the shelters in your area. ***Update – obviously 2020 has become a WAY bigger challenge to most of us than we could have seen when starting this Challenge 2020 – 12 Months of Giving. I did not follow through on several of these months because of this pandemic. BUT – maybe that should be the bigger reason to continue this challenge!!!**** April – Books I know, I know…..how many of you read physical books these days? I know I don’t very often. BUT – there is nothing like having a book on the beach….and I DO live at the beach…so I have some. I’m sure if you thought about it, you do too, especially to continue our Challenge 2020 – 12 months of giving. And then there is the kids……have books they don’t read anymore? Too young for the growing kids? Give them away! Sure you can give them to your friend’s kids….I know I loved when people gave me books for my kiddos. But there are other options too. Check out these places to see if they would like your books: May and December – Toys In this house, we have short attention spans. Meaning – lots of toys we “have to have” for Christmas end up being dust collectors by Spring. So…twice a year I go through bedrooms and the toy/playroom and find a bunch of things that my kids have outgrown. Instead of giving them to Goodwill……are there places that could use them….for free? June – Dishes I know that plates and bowls are not replaced every year, but if you have 5 pie plates? Do you really need them ALL? Or maybe you bought the newest Pampered Chef – if you have that one….why do you need another? July – Personal Hygiene I have this co-worker that takes every hotel shampoo and soap, every time she goes anywhere. She donates those items to our homeless population. AND let me tell you, they are SUPER grateful for those items. How many of you go on trips and bring your own personal care items? I know I do…except maybe body soap. So, is it wrong to take the shampoo and bring it back to our homeless? I don’t think so. So where can you donate personal care items? Let’s check it out: September – Home Decor If you can’t find a way to upcycle your furniture for yourself or someone close to you, consider donating it. Of course, pillows and appliances certainly apply as well. Make sure you call before you haul appliances though, some places will NOT take appliances. Here are some ideas to get you started: October – Warm Jackets and Blankets I picked this month to go through your jackets and blankets because it isn’t quite panic time in many parts of the country. We know that it will get VERY cold, VERY quickly. Going through your closets (and the kids’) to find jackets and blankets BEFORE there is a huge need makes more sense…to me anyway! Jackets are usually used for one season in this house. The kids grow so much from one winter to the next. And honestly, the jackets are kept in pretty good shape. I always offer them to friends first. But I’ve found that the older I get, the more I notice the kids at school getting out of the car with NO jackets!!!! Therefore, here is my list for giving jackets (I’ll get to blankets in a minute): Ok, now let’s talk about blankets – so many people need blankets. There are the usual places – homeless shelters. In general, just find a homeless person and give them a blanket. They aren’t going to turn it down. But there are some places you may not know need them: The bottom line is – don’t throw away those “less than” perfect blankets. Don’t give them to Goodwill – Give them away for FREE to people who shouldn’t have to PAY for them. Catch my drift???? Finish the year strong – November and December – Food and Toys/Books Like we did the previous months of our Challenge 2020 – 12 months of giving, keep in mind that these are the months that families are struggling to keep the lights on while figuring out how to play Santa. I read an article that said the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots campaign will take “gently used” toys. They give them away in a different way than the “new, unwrapped” toys. How do you feel about this challenge? Can you do it? Something specific each month of the year, declutter your home and help someone in need…..sounds easy….right? Let’s do it!!!! Let me know what your ideas are!!!! Happy Giving,

INSIDE: A MESSY TEENAGE BOY ROOM CLEANUP ALL BY HIMSELF – SEE THEY CAN (AND WILL) DO IT IF YOU TEACH THEM More specifically – a TEENAGE boy cleaned HIS OWN room. I’m not making this up at all!!!! I have been NAGGING him for months to go through his drawers…but this….was unexpected! I went into his room one morning and almost fell over. LIKE seriously? How many soda cans do you NEED to keep in your room to make yourself feel better? Why is it so hard to put dirty clothes in the laundry basket? Why do you want the clothing on your floor? I’ve never been that person, so I don’t understand why this kid WANTED to live like this? Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Those funds help keep this site alive and kickin’ but it doesn’t cost YOU a thing! Click here for the full disclosure. Imagine my surprise when he asked me for hangers……I asked, “why, what are you up to?” He simply smiled and said “you’ll see!” Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would see this….. I knew he was proud of himself. But when I told him it was better than I would have done…he was genuinely proud. I asked him what he did. He said “exactly what you told me. One drawer at a time, I put my clothes on my bed. Got rid of what doesn’t fit or I don’t wear any more. I put away the clothes that actually go in THOSE drawers. Then I took the clothes out of my closet. Same thing….removed what I don’t wear and used hangers. Amazing how much neater it looks!” 2 bags of trash, one bag of clothing, and a box of old toys!! I am super proud of this boy!!! Now for the before and after: See – motivation is contagious. Just start somewhere,

Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Click here for the full disclosure. INSIDE: A DREAM BEDROOM FOR A SCHOOL AGED GIRL…MAKEOVER STYLE! Since the middle child got a room makeover, of course the youngest wanted one too. Well, I’m old and my body aches more than it used to…..but I’m on a mission. Next girl bedroom makeover here we come! Same rules apply….pick a color, no characters, and off we went. These kids LOVE bright colors. Yikes!!!! Everything else in the house is gray….some form of gray. And here are these 2 – like the Easter Bunny spat all over them. I’ll have to look up what that means….. This kid wasn’t getting new furniture because she got a new bed about 2 years ago when she became a big girl and didn’t need a toddler bed anymore. Really I think it was almost 3 years ago….I don’t know. Anyway, there’s nothing wrong with her furniture. But the room was a frickin mess!!!! Normally she keeps it pretty tidy but it was packed full of crap! I am going to blame this on new Christmas toys. Current situation PURGE Our first chore was to remove what we didn’t have room for. We moved the rocking chair into our room and started to remove toys, books, and dirty laundry. 1 trash bag of garbage and 1 of give away clothes. PAINT Trusty Sherwin Williams. And the 2 bookshelves she had in her room got a makeover too….I’m kicking myself because I didn’t take before pics for you. Oh well…..trust me when I say they are different now. She picked an interesting color to go on these. Reconfigure We moved dressers, the TV, the bed, and some toys. What a difference just moving the furniture and adding some paint did for this school aged girl bedroom makeover! Reorganize As we were putting our NON-purged items back, we neatly placed them in their new homes. I wish I could convince this kid to put things back like this EVERY time she plays with them, but I’m a realist! We’ll be cleaning this room again in less than 6 months. In the meantime, we will add some wall art to this room and love how grown up she is becoming. Here is what we have now: And her bookshelves took 2 coats but I love the finished product. Yesterday I tackled my unruly closet, today is part 2 of our master closet makeover – husband’s closet – and this time I have nothing to be embarrassed about…..because it’s all HIS!!!!!!!!!!!!! BWHAHAHAHAHAH Same process as with my closet. Remove and PURGE Get everything out of the closet and put it on the bed. Start weeding through the “un-wearables.” I found an old suit that had holes in it and his first suit jacket……oh the shoulder pads!!!! Organize Next, I separated polos, dress shirts, casual shirts, jeans, and dress pants. 2 garbage bags to the Goodwill….they almost made it before he got home! When he saw what I removed, he stepped in and put some of them back…BOO! When putting everything back into the closet, be sure to keep like things together. Before and afters: Two great things came out of our master closet makeover – I convinced hubby that we need NEW closet organization systems AND I know what he has – thus shopping for him is no longer impossible. What does your closet look like? Would you be embarrassed to share it with us? Happy Organizing,

I am so embarrassed by this…..my closet. It is full of old clothing that I haven’t worn in years. A size (or 2) too small….time to get real here. I will never be a size 6 again….as sad as that makes me….I am going to get real today! Welcome to my master closet makeover! It is a mess. Between Thirty One merchandise, scrubs, AND fancy clothes, I have lost control of my master closet. Current situation Remove and PURGE! As always, the first order of business is to take everything out. I put everything on my bed and began the process. 4 trash bags of donations to Goodwill. 1 bag to a friend’s daughter full of those no longer needed small sizes. Another bag full of old scrubs and slightly larger sizes going to a friend. I kept 2 pairs of certain jeans (my favorites that I wouldn’t be able to replace if I got to that size again). Phew! Now what?!? Organize Separate piles into work clothes, tanks, button ups, jackets, jeans, dress pants, dresses, and sweaters. To help me find things easier, I kept like things together. I am soooo excited!!!! So the bins sitting at the top of my closet have sweaters, sweatshirts, summer T-shirt’s, extra tanks, and swimsuits. We’ll change that with seasons. AND – I found my Coach purses!!!! Next, the bottom of the closet. I pulled everything out and went through the 5 plastic bins that has no clear reason for being in there. One box was full of my husbands shoes….why was it in my closet?!?! One plastic bin full of donations I never took to donate. Oh, enlisted my personal assistant aka my son to take stuff to goodwill (funny story – he came home with a new sweatshirt. He decided to go shopping while he was there). One bin of memories – yearbooks, kids memories, and special magazines (think Beatles on the cover of Rolling Stone). Using this shoe organizer, I finally got my shoes under control. Unfortunately, I only got rid of 4 pairs of shoes. And then there was my Thirty One stock. 😳 Just like the clothes, I separated all the merchandise into like things and started snapping pictures. Once I edited the pictures, I posted them on my fan page on Facebook. Sold 10 items in an hour!!!! Now to sell the other 45 items. More like 145 items. I’ll get there. Anyone interested??? Dresser Last thing I tackled in my master closet makeover was my dresser. Ummmmmm not as bad but……pretty bad. Same process Start by dumping everything onto the bed. Separate by likeness. I ended up with one more bag of donations and happiness. Before and afters: It’s so nice to feel like I’ve done something good for myself. I can’t even believe this!!!! Remember, just start somewhere,

Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Click here for the full disclosure. INSIDE: SEE HOW A PLAIN LITTLE GIRL BEDROOM GETS A MAKEOVER. TIME FOR THE GIRL TO GROW….SEE HOW WE TRANSFORM THE ROOM INTO A TWEEN GIRL BEDROOM! It’s time to give the space we sleep in some love! Bedrooms….I’m only going to focus on the 3 that I control. There is one that is home to a teenage boy – he’s on his own. The other – my mother in law. I don’t know anything about that room right now. So…..master and 2 little girls rooms. I recently cleaned one room in this post!!!!!! But she wanted some color. I’ve mentioned before that we didn’t paint any walls for the first year and gosh, probably didn’t hang a picture for like 4 months. We were a little overwhelmed when we moved in almost 5 years ago now. But now that the downstairs is pretty much done, we can move on. This kid inherited some bedroom furniture when her grandmother moved in with us. It hasn’t held up very well. It may or may not have something to do with jumping on beds….heavy dogs bouncing around🤷🏻‍♀️. Anyway, we decided that she needed some new furniture. My husband got a great deal on a bed with head board and foot board, 5 drawer dresser, and 2 night stands. I let her pick out the color, with a few rules…. This is your room forever – I am not painting it every other year so pick a color you can live with. No characters. You will grow out of them. More than one color. You will not have everything pink!!! With that, she picked a color and we went to Sherwin Williams. Let me tell you why I don’t mind spending a little more money on paint. Primer and paint in one?!? Yes please!!! Finish as promised?!? Yes. No satin instead of eggshell blah blah. You tell them ‘I’m painting my kids room’ they suggest a paint that wipes easy but durable to scratches and it goes on easy. Bonus is that it is around the corner from my house, I don’t even get on a main road. AND they always offer 30% off. Plus sign up for their ‘club’ and get random $10 off coupons. When I was a kid, one of my favorite things to do was rearrange my bedroom. Think of different layouts and then figure out how to make it happen without breaking anything. I was good at it too!!!! So naturally, when redoing this kiddo’s room, I wanted to rearrange stuff. Since she was getting new furniture it made complete sense. I asked her what she wanted and then we discussed it while we were painting. She wanted to change her bed to a different wall, move her desk (we also changed the color… on accident, but since she had written all over the previous pink – I said she could continue….we will think of something later to make it not so matchy matchy), and since the dresser was new, she wanted to move the old ones out (she had 2 small ones before). Since we need to organize this space too, we went through her desk….threw away old candles, unused bags were given away, broken things finally tossed out! She just got a new bedspread but it was “uninspiring”….according to her! She spotted this one in Target and went right for it…..she even tried bargaining to be able to get it. Even the bear pillow matched perfectly….cause she needs something else to go on her bed….. And there you have it. A weekend of hard work, elbow grease, and insight…..and we have a room fit for a 9 year old girl! Happy remodeling,
