Once upon a time, not so long ago, there was a family that built a pool in their backyard in July….by the time it was done summer was almost over and no one had any furniture left….POOR family. So Project Backyard was put on hold….. Fast forward to today – we have restarted that project and made some headway. Hence my lack of writing….I have been distracted. Not to mention all the craziness going on in the world….I was wearing so many other hats. Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Those funds help keep this site alive and kickin’ but it doesn’t cost YOU a thing! Click here for the full disclosure. This year, when Spring rolled around, we jumped at the chance to start shopping for our pool furniture. The girls got on Amazon and picked out some loungers. Kris and I went shopping to find the perfect set to complete our outdoor living area. Last year, I redid the teak set we had and called it a day. It wasn’t enough. We didn’t have a place for people to sit when they came to visit. So now we have fixed that and finally have everything we need to make it an outdoor living area we are proud of. Check out our new patio. We found the living room set at the local pottery store. It was the floor model so we could take it home that day. The dining set and firepit chairs came from Lowes. The loungers came from Amazon. Look at this from end of last summer to now I would say that Project Backyard is pretty close to complete. What comes next? Only time will tell……. See you again soon….I promise!

INSIDE: COME SEE HOW EASY IT IS TO MAKE A PERSONALIZED CRICUT FOOTBALL PROJECT FOR YOUR FAVORITE FOOTBALL FAN! YOU CAN EVEN USE MY TEMPLATE!!! One of the best gifts I have ever received was my Cricut. I still have so much to learn but it is so FUN….and relaxing! When my sister asked me to come help clean up my nephew’s room, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to give the little man his own special spot. A place where he can unwind, play, or read a book. Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Those funds help keep this site alive and kickin’ but it doesn’t cost YOU a thing! Click here for the full disclosure. When I asked him what he liked, without hesitation – the boy after my own heart – “GAMECOCK FOOTBALL!!!!” We talked how about his aunt (me) and uncle (my bro) both graduated from there…..etc etc. The garnet and black runs deep around here! University of South Carolina Gamecock Football. That is the kind of room a boy NEEDS! I started with making a simple Cricut Football Project. This is not a tutorial on how to use a Cricut – if you need basics, check out this site. 1 – Cricut Design Space Using the new and improved Cricut Design Space app on the computer (not the website), I wrote some things I thought would work for this sign. 2 – Font After writing all of these down, I realized it wasn’t what I was writing but the font I was using. So I went to Dafont.com and found this perfect font. It’s called Football Attack. I love this site because it downloads the font and installs it to your computer. No need to move it here or there. It’s really easy! 3 – Images Like every college team, USC has several images that fans see and KNOW what team it is. What I learned during this process is that the more complex the image, the harder it is to manipulate in the Cricut Design Space. BUT – I have this amazing friend that I use as my personal Cricut expert. So she walked me through using editing tools for images. I decided on the fighting Gamecock image, downloaded it to my Cricut Design Space, and inserted it into my project. Here is the finished project on Cricut Design Space. If you like the design and want to make your own Cricut football project, feel free to use it by clicking here. 4 – Hanging Medium Wood, canvas, straight on the wall??? Well, they live in an apartment so I decided that the removable vinyl might pose a problem. Canvas – boring. Plus I had leftover wood from another project so…I used my Home Depot pine. 5 – Cutting the Wood I used a REAL power tool!!!!! I was sooooo nervous. Thank goodness I had my super smart handyman, Kris, teaching me the ropes. I was still scared I was going to lose a finger. Using the circular saw, I measured 16″ so that the wood was a perfect square. YAY me! 6 – Whitewash the Wood Using leftover white chalk paint, I added 1/4 cup of water and mixed it well. I dry brushed the 16″ x 16″ piece of wood and waited for it to dry. 7 – Put Vinyl on Wood I bought matte black vinyl and glossy burgundy vinyl – because garnet isn’t a popular color…….and printed my project! Making sure to keep everything centered, I marked where my vinyl was going to start and end. That helped keep the vinyl straight. 8 – Hanging it Using a staple gun, I stapled some leftover fabric (different project) to the back and we used that to hang it in his room!!! The fabric is a little thick handled, but I wanted all the parts of the fabric to be seen. Honestly, my nephew loved it so….there! Click here to see how the Gamecock masterpiece came together! Happy Decorating,

Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Click here for the full disclosure. February is a month for love….and practicing kindness is part of that love. During our 12 months of giving challenge, we take something in our own home and donate it to our community. February is clothing donation month. A way to declutter AND help others….who wouldn’t want to do that? Show of hands?? For February, we are going to focus on clothing. I suggest setting aside several days for this adventure. Whether you tackle a little each day or spend an entire day doing it, we all need to clean out our closets and dressers. Where do we start: Make a list of rooms and clothing storage units: Hubby closet and dresser My closet and dresser Oldest dresser Youngest dresser Some of these tasks are going to require a lot of work. Rules of engagement: You can use the KonMari method, if you want. But clothing doesn’t spark my joy….so these are my questions – Does it fit? Do I like the way it looks on me? Will I wear it? If any of these questions has a “NO” answer, GONE! Purging is the most important part of the process – and it feels really great to have a fresh start. We decided to take each dresser drawer by drawer, one day at a time, in reverse order from the list. Youngest child’s dresser: Top drawer: Undies, socks, bathing suits, and gymnastics leotards. Well, score one for Mom cause the leos are too small but I know just the kiddo that can use them! I don’t know how you feel about this….but I don’t think underwear is a donate-able item? Is it? I didn’t take pictures of this drawer….privacy is very important!!!! Second drawer: Jammies. This was just a matter of size and does she wear it. Third drawer: Shirts. We figured out what fit, what she would wear, and then separated by types of shirts. Long sleeves, short sleeves, and school/camp shirts. Fourth drawer: Pants. Really, it was separate pants and shorts. Last drawer: Dresses. Summer, winter, and fancy dresses. Well, not too many fit anymore. 😥 AND we found some sweatshirt in there! Middle child’s dresser: This one is a little easier because she just went through a growth spurt and we had to determine what she had after everything looked like she was waiting for a flood. Needless to say, she does not have an overabundance of clothing right now. In fact, it wasn’t even worth going through it. Oldest child’s dresser and closet: My son has already completed his task and ended up with a 30 gallon trash bag FULL! I didn’t even have time to take before pictures. Since the kids did such an amazing job during their February clothing donation challenge, Mom and Dad had to hold up their end of the bargain. Hubby’s dresser and closet Since the master closet makeover, my husband and I have kept up with our closets fairly well. So the purge in here was pretty limited. UNTIL……..I went to his dresser…………………………………………………………………………. Ummmmmmmmm…………………….I love him. I really do. I’m going to show you the before pictures – there is nothing to say…. Top drawer: I do NOT know why ONE person would need all of these socks…..but he claims he does. Dress socks for work, white socks for sneakers, and warm socks for cold weather. Second drawer: Home to the white t’s and…underwear? I guess when you have an entire drawer FULL of socks you can’t make room for underwear in there…so the next best place is the next drawer – with your white t-shirts….whatever works for the user! No picture….again privacy issues….. Third drawer: This is where the greatest purge took place. Many of these shirts haven’t been worn in years….I removed them and refolded the rest. Fourth drawer: The comfy drawer! I found 3 pairs of pants BEHIND this drawer. Do you know what this tells me? Things were stuffed so tight in there the pants started running away! HAHAHA! Bottom drawer: I couldn’t open this drawer when I started. Of course, when I removed the runaway pants from the above drawer, I was able to move it a little. I literally had to remove 5 pairs of shorts to open the drawer. My dresser and closet Since I had done this about a year ago, my dresser and closet were not in need of a complete overhaul….like some people. But some drawers needed attention – Jammie drawer I have a TON of comfortable pants that I don’t wear. Time to give them away. YES, I still have a t-shirt from my high school softball team! Shirt drawer I have accumulated several shirts this year…therefore I must get rid of some. Closet This was pretty easy because it was mainly my shoes and of course my Thirty One collection that needed organizing. I got rid of 4 pairs of shoes. And decided that my Thirty One Collection isn’t that bad this time! PHEW! This concludes our February Clothing Donation Month for our 12 months of Giving Challenge. Did you miss last months giving challenge? Check it out here! Happy Donating,

Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Click here for the full disclosure. During our 2020 challenge of 12 months of giving, January is food donation month. So let’s get started with what we have in our kitchen to donate. Not everyone has the same spaces in their kitchen, but I’m going to cover them all. If you have questions about what else is on our list of 12 months of Giving, check out this post. Where to start: Pantry Generally pantries hold dry goods. So let’s start there – Remove extra boxes of rice, cereal, pasta, and lentils (beans, grains etc) Do you have extra crackers you aren’t going to eat? Costco trip gone awry? There is no point in holding on to something you won’t eat just because you bought it. If it will expire before you will eat it, its FOOD WASTE! I don’t see the sense in that. If you want to see what I did in my pantry, check it out here. Lazy Susan If you have one of these, it’s a great place to store your canned goods. Did you buy 4 cans of cream of mushroom soup for Thanksgiving? Will you use them before they expire? Gravy? Pie making supplies – evaporated milk, pumpkin, pie filling….etc Canned veggies, again, Costco trip that didn’t work out like you thought? I tend to hang on to things I THINK I’m going to use…and then they expire before I get around to it. WHY???? I use pumpkin ONCE a year….Let it go! Baking Supplies The key to knowing what you have is cleaning out and reorganizing the place you keep the goods! Check out how we made over our baking cabinet. Will you use 4 cans of frosting you bought for gingerbread houses? Do you need 3 kinds of cake mix? Too many containers of salt? Cold goods Shelters and food banks generally shy away from perishable items. This is due to limited space to store it and the liability that you didn’t keep it cold while it was at your house…..so if you have these things to donate, call the place you are donating ahead of time. However, if you find a place that will take these items, check out this post to see how to organize your fridge. What to put your goods in There are several options, do NOT buy anything special. Just use what you have. Especially because it was just a holiday….I know y’all have Amazon boxes still!!! Plastic bins Cardboard boxes (like Amazon) Bankers boxes Where to donate Check out Food Pantries for a list of donation sites in your area. I donate to our local community kitchen. They supply afterschool snacks to 3 area programs, dinners to high risk teens living at a shelter near by, and it is all FREE of charge to the people it serves. I wish I could do more…….but here is my box. Feels pretty good, doesn’t it?? Stay tuned for more donation challenges. Thanks for completing the January food donation challenge. Happy Giving,

INSIDE: LOOK NO FURTHER, 5 EASY DIY HALLOWEEN CRAFTS JUST FOR YOU Kids love crafts…apparently no matter the age. I think they love crafts because they love making messes. So as parents, we want to foster their creativity and yet…we hesitate because they are really good at making HUGE messes. Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Those funds help keep this site alive and kickin’ but it doesn’t cost YOU a thing! Click here for the full disclosure. I have found some easy AND not so messy DIY Halloween crafts for you and your kids. 1 – Pumpkin Stickers Where else do moms find the greatest things on the planet?!? Target!!! While prepping my Target run – drive up, pick up – I came across these stickers. I think they were made for craft pumpkins but I wanted to see how they did on real pumpkins. I could have added some craft pumpkins to my order but we were going to our local pumpkin patch anyway…so we grabbed these little guys and went to work. Let me be clear – I was so excited that my almost 18 year old participated. I couldn’t stop taking pictures of him. I did have to crop out an inappropriate hand gesture BUT look he’s smiling!!!!!! (And yes, I know he needs a haircut but he is almost an adult and I cannot make him get one!) We were so happy with the results we put them on display for all to see. 2 – Pipe Cleaner and Pony Bead Pumpkins A few years ago, I was trolling Pinterest for some fun, easy Halloween crafts for my pipsqueaks. They are a little older now and didn’t want to do this project this year. However, I still think it’s amazing!! Cutesy Crafts has a lot of super cute ideas for pony beads. 3 – Toilet Paper Ghost Eyes We did this one 2 years ago for our Halloween party at our house. We asked some friends to save as many toilet paper rolls as they could. Then we had what we lovingly referred to as ‘Craft Night.’ It involves the kids crafting and the moms drinking Twisted Teas. But we had fun doing this one. What you need – Toilet paper rolls Exacto knife Glow sticks Fishing line or some other clear string Black Tape – duct tape or electrical tape Directions Remove leftover toilet paper from the roll. I don’t know about you but my toilet paper was glued to the roll like it was protecting Fort Knox…. I actually had to roll my thumbs over the glued TP to get it off. PHEW!!! 2. Using your exacto knife (careful not to cut your fingers), cut the eyes out of the roll. 3. Break 3-4 glow sticks and place them in your roll. 4. Tape the ends closed with the black tape. 5. Tape your fishing line to the roll and hang them from tree branches or fan blades – depending on what you are using them for. I think the best part about this is you can do steps 1-3 before adding the glow sticks. Actually for our project we did steps 1-3, taped the end of the roll AND attached the string. So all we had left to do what break the glow sticks and close the other end of the roll just in time for Halloween. 4 – Mason Jar Pumpkins I found these plastic mason jars in Bullseye’s Playground for $3. And I bought 3 sets of them. I don’t know why. I ended up using them for this and put the rest away for another day. It was a good deal….I couldn’t pass it up. What you need – Mason jars Acrylic paint (orange, green and black) Paint brushes Painters tape (if you want perfect lines) Directions Make sure the mason jars are clean and dry. Paint the lower portion orange and top portion green. Depending on the look you want, you will need several coats. 2. Paint your eyes, mouth, nose and whatever other traits you want your pumpkin to have with the black paint. 3. Insert a NON flammable tealights in the mason jar. Glass gets HOT!!!!! You can pick up pumpkin lights just about anywhere for less than $1. Aren’t they cute??? 5 – Tissue Ghost Garland This might be the easiest thing I have ever done. And I had everything on hand!!! What you need – Cotton balls Tissues Dental floss Wrap 2 tissues around a cotton ball. 2. Tie the heads with dental floss and keep pulling. 3. Use a sharpie to draw little eyeballs on the ‘heads.’ I literally pushed the sharpie down and twisted a little bit. 4. Hang anywhere!!! Woohoooo!!!! Did you give these a try? Let’s see what you came up with!!!!! Happy Crafting,

The backyard is coming along nicely. I am in LOVE with our new space and I am LOVING that kids don’t spend hours inside! On weekends, they are up and begging to swim by 8:30am! It is NO where NEAR done but what a difference in our family life! We have a lot of work to do but we are doing it at our pace. It’s not a snail’s pace, but until I’m done with school…we don’t have an endless supply of money to go on these shopping sprees. We have some major things that need work – and really – we can’t have any type of party until we fix some of these issues. The first order of business in the yard was the grass. With all the machines coming in and out every day for 4 weeks…we lost a lot of grass. That meant a lot of dirt and sand surrounded the pool. It made vacuuming the pool a twice a day adventure, thankfully, both girls enjoyed helping with that! This past Friday, we received our FIRST delivery of sod. Personal side note: I’m in the wrong business. These people wanted $350 PER PALLET to install the sod. You lay it down and unroll it….really $350???? NOPE! That meant more elbow grease for the grown-ups. Of course, it was the week that the oldest (male) child was on vacation!! So it was me and Kris! Thankfully, it was not too horrible and we did have a friend come help. (I’m really grateful for this person’s help because I was fading toward the end! He came in and provided the muscle that I no longer had!) The second fix was where to put the grill equipment – it was in the way just about everywhere it went. But like every project lately – there is more than one reason to do it! Another project was what to do with the existing patio or screened in porch. Kris took down the screens and it made a WORLD of difference. It was a much more inviting space. Honestly, it feels like the next room in the house now. Crazy how screens can make us feel. When we were looking at the patio and a pool deck, it was a world wind of possibilities. We both had ideas in our head….guess what? Neither of them came true. When I finished the teak furniture, we decided it belonged right there. A lounge area. That meant we went back to the drawing board for outdoor eating and cooking space. When we built the house (5 years ago – WOW – that seems so long), we had the builder open a gas line to the outside. The idea was we would put an outdoor kitchen in one day. This actually helped us decide where to go next. Since it was the perfect place, half the equipment was already there, and we had a dirt mound for a yard….let’s add the concrete pad for the kitchen now! We added the concrete slab next to the existing one. And moved all the outdoor cooking necessities out there! I have to tell you, my grill master husband was like a little kid that day. Cleaning off all his toys, putting them in their rightful places, and covering them with the special covers he bought. We have a lot more work to do but we are enjoying this for now! So now we have our lounging area, cooking area, and swimming area. We are almost ready for a party….just need an eating area. Maybe a bar? Some chairs? I could go on…..but that money thing….jeesh! 2 projects down – 100’s more to go! Stay tuned for the next adventure in our backyard project!

The construction work is done!!!!!!!!!!! Now we have to add water. We started filling Saturday morning but only one hose at a low level. Of course, we promised the kids they could swim once it was half way filled. That did NOT happen on Saturday. By Sunday, the kids were itching….the anticipation was too much!!!!! By then, we were given the green light to turn on 2 hoses and crank them up full blast! This helped….a LOT! While middle child was waiting, she decided to learn how to care for the pool and told us SHE would be our ‘pool boy!’ 🤷🏻‍♀️ Since the water level was rising, we decided we would have our first guests over later that night. And the kids got in right at the half way mark!!!! How sad is it that I didn’t get ONE picture of them enjoying the pool?!! Not gonna lie, it was because I was in there with them. Not really….while they were swimming Kris and I were doing work! I finished the teak furniture, he tore down the screens around the patio, installed a ceiling fan, and a changed out a light. We found this perfect umbrella to shade us while on our ‘future loungers’ and the side step. We have a lot left to do to make this the outdoor paradise we want it to be…but baby steps! For now we are all enjoying swimming and picking out the perfect furniture piece to add. This is just the beginning! Stay tuned for furniture, outdoor kitchen area, and firepit!

We have a porch and a very boring backyard. ☹️ Our neighborhood doesn’t have a community pool 😦 Slip and slides get boring. You can only ask friends to go swimming so many times a summer before they feel like you are using them….so what should we do? Save!!! For years!!!! Finally, we decided we had enough for the pool we wanted. All 5 of us got a blank paper and drew our perfect pool. It was amazing…we all drew the same kind of pool. Kidney shaped with a step in. Now some of us had different sizes and accessories but overall we were all in agreement. Now, the work of deciding who and how much was up to the man with connections. Kris handled all of that. I will tell you we had to settle on waiting another year for some of the things we wanted. It’s ok. Reality check. Once all the technical stuff was done, we got a computer aided drawing of the pool in our yard. And man, we were surprised by the size. We made minimal changes to some of the curves but overall kept it the same. We got approved by the county for building permits. And the HOA approved our plan! The very next day – It’s official right?!??? Really….we waited almost another week. Then one day we came home to this layout. One corner was WAY closer to the house then I thought it would be so I made a simple request to move it. Hahahahahahah simple! Actually the guys all said it was too close and if I wanted to change it TODAY was the only day I could! Because the next day…. They started digging and then it rained. Finally on a Saturday, the whole crew came over…by the end of the day we had this – But guess what happened that night? Rain 🌧 but these guys were pros. No worries. They have had this happen before! The following Monday they were pouring concrete. The electrician came with his drone and took some really cool pictures of our backyard. It was another 2 weeks before we saw more progress. The electrician had to lay lines and insert pumps….nothing exciting to anyone but us!! Because we knew with each day, we were closer to a pool. Then the pavers arrived…this was the piece that made us get our butts in gear. What are we going to do for furniture? When the pavers were done, the plaster went in!!! Oh my gosh!!!!!! And here we are. Ready for water. Stay tuned for the big reveal!!!!

INSIDE: HOW TO CARE FOR TEAK FURNITURE AND REVIVE IT TO LOOKING NEW, EVEN IF IT’S OLD! With the pool construction nearing an end, we kicked it in high gear to find all the accessories we wanted for the deck. Years ago, we found an outdoor teak furniture set at Kroger for $160. What?!?? Actually it was 12 years ago!!! We have never found another set like it so we did everything we could to care for it. Teak is a great wood for outdoor furniture. It’s a hard wood therefore makes sturdy furniture. Naturally occurring in Southern Asia, teak is weather resistant and can take on the toughest rains! Perfect for our hot & humid southern summers! However, unlike other hard woods, teak needs lots of love to keep its natural beauty. Sun can drain the wood of its color and moisture so it requires some oiling every few years. Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Those funds help keep this site alive and kickin’ but it doesn’t cost YOU a thing! Click here for the full disclosure. In the 12 years we’ve owned this furniture I’ve only oiled it 2 times before today! But….knowing what I wanted pushed me to do it the right way this time. First vacuum all the debris and spider webs off the underside. Then give it a hose down, cleaning off any leftover dirt. Before the next step, you need to be sure it is completely dry!!!! Freshly washed and dried. You can see where the cushions have saved it from some damage. The next order of business was to oil the teak! For this you need these supplies: Teak oil hardens INSIDE the wood so several coats are required to get the look you desire. AND if you’ve not oiled it in a long time…it will absorb the oil at lighting speeds. Using your stain sponges, pour the oil a little at a time. You don’t want the sponge getting all the oil. And then you wipe. It’s just that simple. Try to follow the grain of the wood but some pieces are more difficult to do this with. And that my friends is what some elbow grease and teak oil can do for you! Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go finish the table and couch! We have people to entertain in our new pool!! Happy Teaking,

HOW TO BUILD THE PERFECT FAIRY GARDEN – WHEN YOU DON’T KNOW HOW AND DON’T WANT TO SPEND A FORTUNE. I didn’t know this was a thing until I was at work and the girl I was training showed me her MANY fairy gardens. She was talking about making one for her desk…ok lady! Whatever floats your boat! But then I saw the pictures and I thought…I know where one of those would look amazing. And what a great craft for me and the kids to do!!! There are plenty of big box craft stores that have fairy garden accessories but I didn’t want to spend $12 for a deer…🤷🏻‍♀️ Disclosure Statement: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link. Click here for the full disclosure. I went to my local Dollar Tree and struck GOLD! I found the container, moss, rocks, plants, and all the trinkets a fairy garden could want. All for $1 a piece! $13 for the whole thing! Sorry box stores… Since I had no idea what I was doing, I asked my girls what they thought we should do. First, I had them draw their ideas out on paper, I wish I grabbed a picture of those! Ultimately, everyone said ‘cute and cuddly place that fairies would want to hang out.’ Ok…I pretended to understand this and went to work. Off we went, to make our perfect fairy garden I used one bag of rocks to fill the container but it wasn’t enough so I opened the second bag and added about 1/3 of the new bag. Much better! I added one bag of moss which was plenty. We removed the plants from the cheesy planters they came with and revealed a stick. Using that stick, we stuck the plants through the moss and rock. The ‘welcome’ sign stayed perfectly between the plants. I didn’t glue anything! Our next idea was to create a pathway for the fairies to sit in the leaf chairs that were going to sit on either side of the welcome sign. Thank goodness we had more rocks! We lined the walkway with rocks and decided the mailbox belonged at the end of the walkway. A raccoon and fox hung out waiting for our fairy to arrive. The turtle sat under the welcome sign showing her bright pink flower. Today our fairy garden sits at the top of our stairs with our family scrabble letters. I have left over pieces that I will probably add to another garden someday. I had so much fun making this with the girls, I understand what the crazy lady was raving about at work! Happy fairy hunting,
