Clean Your Gas Stove in 6 Easy Steps

INSIDE: HOW TO CLEAN YOUR GAS STOVE IN 6 EASY STEPS (AND IN 30 MINUTES OR LESS!)

FIRST STEP – don’t make a mess! Seriously, don’t cook and you won’t have to worry about it.

Well maybe not….I don’t usually cook but my husband does. And he is FANTASTIC at it. I think it’s a rule that all great cooks must make a mess. It’s a sign of a good meal or something. Cause he can dirty some dishes!

Of course, our trade off is whoever cooks does NOT clean! That means I’m stuck cleaning, most of the time.

Oh well, small price to pay for gourmet meals.

Seriously though, don’t let it pile up – it will be harder to clean the longer you wait. So just clean up as soon as you can!!!

Step 1

Remove all the pieces. The grates, burners, burner covers and the knobs. They should all come off easily.

I got excited and took the picture before I removed the griddle burner! DOH!

Step 2

To clean your burner and burner covers, wet your sponge and add a dash of dish soap. Scrub the burner covers and any parts of the burners that need attention. I don’t scrub too hard on the burners, since they are protected by the covers. Set those aside to dry.

To clean the grates, take the scrubby side of the sponge and gently wipe; don’t scrub!!! I like to think of these like cast iron skillets – no soap, no harsh chemicals, gentle wiping will do the trick. The key to this is doing it when it happens and not letting it build up. Set those aside to dry.

To clean the knobs, using the same technique as you did with the burner covers, add some water and soap. Scrub gently around the knobs and rinse. Allow them to air dry.

Now it’s time for the dirty work!!!

Step 3

Using your sponge, wipe off all the loose food particles.

Then put a tiny dab of dish soap on the scrubby side of the sponge. Get your sponge wet, work up a lather and scrub the stove top until the food remnants are mostly gone. Rinse the sponge until all of the soap is gone.

Use the sponge to collect the soapy water from your stove top.

Step 4

If you don’t know about Barkeepers Friend, you have been missing out!!! I like the powder, but they have liquid as well.

Sprinkle Barkeepers Friend on the stove top, concentrating on areas that have built up grease or food.

Make sure the sponge is wet otherwise Barkeepers Friend will not work. Put some elbow grease into it and scrub away! When you are finished, rinse the sponge again making sure all the Barkeepers Friend is gone. Wipe the leftover Barkeepers Friend off with your clean, wet sponge.

Step 5

Now it’s time for my favorite cleaner on the planet….Mrs. Meyers. You can use any multipurpose cleaner, but you are missing out if you haven’t tried this stuff.

Spray Mrs. Meyers around the stove top, don’t forget the backs and the sides. Using a paper towel, or cloth, wipe around the stove top. Try to go in one direction so you don’t create streaks.

Don’t forget the control panels!!!! You just washed the knobs…..you should put them back on a clean surface!

Step 6

Put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

Remember that the burners should only fit where they belong. Don’t force them in. If you have all one size, I don’t know why you would, but maybe you should label them (front left….etc).

I know that there are deep cleaning techniques that should be used – like taking a toothbrush to the corners and a paper clip to clear out the burners….BUT if you do this weekly, or monthly (who am I to judge), then you won’t need to deep clean like that.

Do you have any tricks to cleaning your gas stove that I missed? Do you use the paper clip???? Caught ya!!!

Happy Cleaning,
