How to Throw a Super Fun Sesame Street Birthday Party

INSIDE: HOW TO THROW A SUPER FUN SESAME STREET BIRTHDAY PARTY COMPLETE WITH DECORATION IDEAS AND SIMPLE GAMES!

Two little people that I know loved Sesame Street when they were about to turn 3. Since their first dual birthday party was such a success and I had so much fun planning it, I decided to throw them a Sesame Street Birthday Party.

Theme

Using my birthday planning guide, I started with the theme as above, can you tell me how to get….how to get to Sesame Street!!!!

Location and Date

We picked a date based on warmer weather. And we wanted to be able to have another bounce house for the kids (it was a huge success last year) so we decided to have the party at my house.

Keeping in mind that we need it to be warm, not hot, and relatively rain free (away from Spring rains on the coast), we choose May 9th. Low and behold – we had a tropical storm come through (three weeks before the technical start of “hurricane season”).

So emergently we brought the party inside. We already had tables and chairs, thank goodness!

Let me talk about the tables and chairs for a minute, we borrowed them from the hotel my husband runs but….I would have rented them if need be. This is the second year in a row they have come in handy for eating and playing our games with kids.

Invitations

Of course, I found the perfect invitation on Etsy for $12. It was more expensive than most because it included a picture of the birthday kids. I printed them at Walgreens, as it is the best option.

Decorations

For decorations, I got on Pinterest and found some really cool things to help us decorate the house. I used this tutorial to make different kinds of Sesame Street characters.

Elmo….everyone loved this one.
Big Bird got beat up a little before being hung up. I hung Elmo and Big Bird on the chandelier above my kitchen table.
Cookie Monster!! He was hung from the lantern lights above my kitchen island.
Abby Cadabby was hung off the railing down the stairs.
Oscar, his eyebrows were soooo cool.
Grover. I hung Grover and Oscar on the landing overlooking the formal living room AKA the makeshift party place.

I stopped at my favorite place to pick up the rest of the decorations. Sesame Street plates, cups, and napkins were readily available at my local Target…..so that’s where I went!

Food

Since the party was rather close to lunch time, I wasn’t sure how much food to make. So here is our Sesame Street Birthday Party food:

Menu

  • Mr. Noodles macaroni salad
  • Elmo’s goldfish
  • Bert and Ernie’s fruit kabobs
  • Cookie’s veggie sticks with ranch
  • Zoe’s zany hot dogs
  • Snuffy’s mini pizzas
  • Abby’s sprinkle snack mix

I forgot to print the Sesame Street food labels ahead of time, so I made makeshift labels with cardstock. Instead of having characters everywhere, I used table cloths that were plain colors like this yellow one.

I made a cake so the kids could have candles to blow out. BUT……I wrote all pretty on top of it and asked my oldest child to sprinkle some funfetti on it…..

He tried to fix it and smeared the writing. Note to self: teenage boys don’t care about cake presentation!

The star of the food was the cupcakes, as always!!! They were made by a family friend and she got so super creative with these.

The cupcakes matched the icing, the details on their eyes, and the cookies for mouths, she really outdid herself. Seriously, I think my dad (who hates cake) ate 12 of them!

Games

The original plan was a bouncy house with the Sesame Street characters but the storm cancelled those plans and we were forced to think on the fly.

Keeping children entertained can be challenging, especially with short notice.

So we went with:

  • Coloring Station
  • Playdough Station
  • Painting Station

When there was a break in the wind and rain, we took them outside and let them blow bubbles. It was incredible, the kids would blow bubbles and the neighborhood would fill with the bubbles.

Goody Bags

Goody bags for this party were limited. We had bubbles, one bag of M&Ms, and they took home their playdough. I know my party planning guide said NOTHING messy. But in this case, we had to use some of our “goodies” for the party given the circumstance.

We had a lot of fun despite the weather, hope this helps guide you for your Sesame Street Birthday Party too!

Happy planning,
