Stunning Console Table Makeover to Revamp a Living Room

INSIDE: WE TAKE A BORING OLD TABLE AND TRANSFORM IT INTO A STUNNING CONSOLE TABLE TO REVAMP OUR LIVING ROOM

Sometimes I get an itch to do something crazy and wild….sometimes I’m just boring (my hubby likes to remind me that I’m getting old). Of course, he was not surprised when I told him I wanted to makeover the console table we were gifted from his mom.

This is funny because I am talking about painting furniture and he starts talking about building another salt water fish tank. Long story short – we saved a turtle from our pool on Christmas Eve and now we have this:

Can you tell they already know when someone is coming to feed them?
There is little Eve, she is still very shy.

Of course, that gave him the itch to start a reef tank. We had one in the old house but it’s a lot of work and with the kids, he decided he needed to dismantle it. Now that the kids are fairly self-sufficient…..he wants to start another one. Our compromise? I get to paint ALL the furniture I want.

We will see how we divide the garage up between us later.

The console table sits at our front entrance.

It is my decoration station for all things holiday. But with the tank going into this room, I thought we should try to have a little more cohesiveness.

I have scoured the internet looking for ideas for this console table makeover. So many that I think about them in my dreams.

I decided this was the look I wanted. Without the perfect white paint….I think I need a little distressing….

SO off we went to Home Depot.

Oh baby….gonna get to you girlllllll….oh wait that’s NKOTB.

1 – Remove the drawers

I took the drawers out and moved them into the garage. I removed the hardware with a screwdriver and taped off the front to protect the rest of the drawer.

2 – Paint the drawers

This part was nerveracking! I enlisted a cute little helper, that way if it got messed up, I could blame her cute little face!

I used a regular paint brush, used very little paint, and went over one time.

First coat done!

Top – Coat #1
Bottom – Coat #2

Second coat! I was so amazed at how quickly it dried.

Honestly, this was a test run. I have not used chalk paint before….I needed to see how well the paint would cover the dark stain without primer or sanding. Overall, I was impressed at the coverage. So I gave myself the green light to continue.

3 – The table

There were a few spots on the top of the table that needed to be sanded, wear and tear mostly. I used my handy orbit sander and realized that if I wasn’t using chalk paint and had to sand all the poly off this table, I would have given up very quickly.

After I wiped the saw dust off, I started painting the bottom. I was so nervous about brush strokes, but it was not an issue as I continued to paint. I painted the entire bottom portion with 3 coats. There were some spots that the stain bled through but nothing too extreme and I think it made it look cool.

Once the bottom was dry, I taped off the top portion to make sure the charcoal color didn’t mess up the white. I thought it would be cool to tape it off in the middle of the lip, it was a good idea!

Then I painted the top of the table…..OH that color. I was scared to DEATH. But now….I love it!

I let this sit for a few days. Primarily because we took a mini-vacation.

4 – Distressing

I couldn’t let this table look perfectly painted. It was too stark white for me. So I grabbed my sanding sponge and went crazy on the edges.

I sanded the edges of each drawer.

Then I picked some places on the bottom portion of the table. The details on the sides were perfect!

5 – The wax

I had no idea what I was doing here. NONE!

So when I opened the wax and found a strange substance….I felt ill-prepared. Instead of panicking, I did what I thought seemed correct. I found a lint free cloth and went crazy with the wax. I did 2 coats on everything and a 3rd on the top.

6 – New hardware

Once everything was dry and had sat for 24 hours – per the wax people’s recommendations – I installed the new drawer pulls.

Let me say – picking out these pulls was easy. They match the banister iron and the old hardware was a standard 3″ BUT…..they didn’t have the ones I wanted at my Home Depot store. SO….I ordered them online, had them shipped to my store FOR FREE, and picked them up a few days later. Thankfully, I looked ahead and had my pulls ready to go when the table wax was dry.

Installing them was easy, I lined up the previous hardware holes and screwed in the new pulls.

Are you ready for the big reveal????? I am so excited about this……

I am so happy about how this turned out, I want to do more immediately! It was easy, quick, and it looks great in this room. I cannot wait to see how it looks with our new tank!

Happy Changes,
